I was playing social doubles at my tennis club at the weekend. Was partnered with someone I didn't know. Quite a few times he called some of our opponents shots out, which were clearly in, yet challenged some shots of his that were out but he questioned whether they were really in. To be fair at the beginning I gave him the benefit of the doubt and that perhaps his eyesight was poor but given that his "errors" were all in all direction I could only conclude that he was doing it deliberately. Although our opponents didn't say anything I could see by their reactions that they knew the balls were in.

The question is why did he do it? Although I wouldn't cheat during competitive matches either at least I can understand the motive but why would you cheat in social tennis where whether you win or lose is irrelevant and you just end up making yourself look a complete dick?

People are dicks, and many don't like losing no matter what is at stake.

Some people just have to "win" to satisfy their egos.

I compete (using the term very loosely) in local running races. I've had people run into me, block me and cut me up when I'm trying to overtake. It's not even like this is for the lead. They'll be battling desperately to be 33rd rather than 34th or whatever. It's nuts.

I've seen the same at work, any kind of business game or 'fun' tasks at a conference and she had to win and would cheat to do so.
Never understood it, the prize was nothing to her but she had to win and would boast about the cheating afterwards.

I got made redundant and she got promoted, as it turns out I now have a better deal then her and she will have to keep up the competitive bullst to survive.

It must be exhausting for the poor trout.

You mean you don't cheat at Monopoly if you are the bank?

Or if you're shuffling the cards at Poker?

My understanding of the rules of tennis is not great.

A "Let" is when it hits the net on the serve, but contacts inside the service area on the other side of the net.

What happens if the balls strike your cheating b*****d doubles partner on the back of the head and lands in the service area....11 times in a row!

As said, some people cannot bare to loose. But they do not realise how much of a cock it makes them look

The absolute worst bellendery you will see is on a golf course. Amateurs pretending its the 18th at the open and all to play for. Takes all the fun out of it.

I play tennis quite a lot (singles and doubles) and I'm fairly easy going with the calls, its social after all...but there is this one guy who is notorious for bad calls, everyone whose played him says so. Even at other clubs he's played at. if I'm playing doubles with him I've had to side with the opponents often.

I don't know if it's cheating or wonky eyes, must be the former as he's a reasonable player.

Still, what goes around comes around eh..

In the end I pulled him up on a couple of calls and gave the points to the other side. Although I didn’t call him out for cheating. I just said the ball was in.

We won fairly easily so hopefully the dodgy calls didn’t make a difference.

Last time I checked there wasn't anything in the rules about the banker paying themself a huge salary for the work they did. I always liked being the banker as I would double my salary and give myself bonuses when paying other people. biggrin

Competitiveness is one of my ugliest traits, however I’ve never felt a need to cheat. I hate losing and I’m terrible at it, to the point where I’ll avoid activities where I know I’d lose, but I’ll take being a sore loser over a cheat any day of the week.

Precisely why you’ll never ever find me at a ten pin bowling alley. fking kryptonite for me.... I have a two year old and a 4 month old (both boys). At some point I will be required to take them bowling..... it will be at this point that they lose all respect for their father.
