Was just having a think there about people's life expectations there compared to even what they were a generation ago.

What age do people expect to live to, subject to not being struck down by a terminal illness, accident, etc in the meantime?

But would you want to know?

It would make financial planning so much easier but not sure I can handle the knowledge myself.

My father, when he reached 41, became the oldest living male in our family, ever. He has extensively researched the genealogy of our family (on his side) and got back to c.1650ish

He is now approaching 70. He was however a very heavy smoker most of his life and pneumonia almost got him last summer.

It’s quite a sobering thought considering I am imminently 37.

ETA: the family up to my parents were very poor, pit-folk - bottom of the working classes - heavy drinker, smokers, gamblers ... all the stereotypical elements you would expect from a true northern ‘underclass’ family group.

My father got to 84 but I thought he'd do the ton (my aunt, his sister. will be 101 this year). His demise was ultimately heart related. My mother managed 88 but had a pretty stty quality of life for the last 7 years (mainly as a result of Type 2 diabetes).

So far I have no record of either condition but who knows? At the moment my retirement planning is based on achieving 80 at least but who knows.....Live for the day!

Going on family history the early/mid 60s are looking likely and I'm certainly little perkier than any of those lot. That'll do me.

Luckily our hearts blow like hand grenades which is probably the cleanest way to go.

I absolutely do not want to linger in piss poor health and if I was imprisoned in a failing carcass I'll be straight off to have myself done in.

According to that, 76 for me.

I hope I have my mum's genes, as she's still very active and acute at 75.....

I have another 51 years left on the planet, so will peg it at 85. Thats a good innings if you ask me, my BMI is 28 though thats more sobering than my date of death.

I’m 38, It’s 50:50 whether I’ll make 60 or less at the moment. But it is what it is. Either way I’m not expecting to see ‘old age’.
