As a percentage of take-home salary? If your single car is your hobby, then how much more did you spend than was absolutely necessary to get something you really wanted?
Considering a rather selfish and expensive purchase and desperately struggling to apply man-maths to justify it.
Survey is pointless, disposable income would be more relevant. Considering a rather selfish and expensive purchase and desperately struggling to apply man-maths to justify it.

No it isn't. That wouldn't account for what proportion people consider 'disposable'. Is it everything after mortgage and bills? Mortgage, bills and food? Mortgage, bills, food, savings, car, holiday fund, iPhone, TV? etc. All money is 'disposable', it just depends on what method one chooses to dispose of it.A quick stab at where my money goes in descending order of magnitude:
Income tax
House
Investment & saving
Other monthy recurring such as utilities, local taxes, insurances (dunno how to rank if I'd split them)
Consumables (food, clothing)
Kids
GF
Remaining less than 1%: Hobbies such as cars, whisky and concerts.

Kind of agree.1% of what? And does the responder calculate from net or gross income?
If you mean 'what's your yearly car budget', as in a poll with budget ranges per annum, that would make more sense to me too.

The OP states take-home income. 1% of what? And does the responder calculate from net or gross income?
And it's nothing to do with cars, it's about a hobby. It may well be that for many on here hobby=cars. A hobby might be crown green bowls or hill walking (cheap) to golf or shooting (somewhere in the middle) to something like heli-skiing or sailing (expensive). Hence the survey.
I have a reasonably expensive hobby, owning a steam engine which we take to steam rallies.
I have the engines maintenance, testing, consumables, insurance and coal/wood.
I need to run a 7.5 tonne truck - insurance, tax, maintenance, fuel.
I also need a caravan - insurance, maintenance.
I get some assistance with expenses from rallies but not a huge amount.
Net cost per year, not counting any capital outlay is about £3-4K. Luckily my wife
is fully onboard so no conflict there!

Cool! Any pics/vids
Mine is about 25% of joint net income, but I have reasonably expensive hobbies (track days and sailing), and my holidays are centred around them, so they are also my (family) holiday spending in the case of sailing.

That's reasonable, I assume you'd be able to release the capital. Running a flash car gets eye-watering, as does a boat, or skiing. I don't know about golf but I bet its not difficult to ramp up a few £, particularly if you factor in boys weekends in Portugal or whatever.
