I was walking home yesterday and let a couple of people through the barrier bit on an underpass coming the other way, they said thank, i nodded and smiled and then they sarcastically said 'your welcome' as they walked away.

i don't think i have ever said your welcome in my life. no problem, or no worries sometimes but never YW.

Have i been raised with no manners?!

They are the ones with no manners. More properly they should have asked your name and address and handwritten with a fountain pen a short but heartfelt thank you letter to you. They sound like they belong in the council thread.

I’d laughed and waived them off/away.

Depends how they said it. You mentioned a note of sarcasm in their voice so assumed it was a slight.
Might have come across better if they smiled back and looked like they meant it, perhaps.

If I thanked someone, I wouldn't expect a "you're welcome" in reply.

But I often thank people sarcastically for not thanking me. So if I hold a door open for someone who just walks through without a word, I will shout "thank you" at them.

Consider maybe the other person didn't see your small nod or smile

Just say thanks it's always easier.

to clarify they said thanks to me for waiting for them. i didnt say YW. no one i know says it that ive noticed either, but we are probably east saxon scum!

just wondered how the general PH mob thinks if they think its impolitness by lack of your welcomes.

i dont care if someone says it to me either when i say thanks, in fact i think its a bit OTT in politeness, but maybe again im just east saxon scum!

I get this.

When I do someone a courtesy (holding a door, letting someone through a gap etc) and they say thank you - the sun shines a little brighter, the day is happier and my world is a community of like minded citizens.

When they ignore my help - the storm clouds gather, the pick ax handles are readied and I am convinced that there is no society left.

My wife tells me that I am prone to over reaction

I've said "you're welcome" sarcastically when somebody hasn't said thank you.

Sounds more like passive aggressiveness than sarcasm,

Sorry to double post but in my experience poor manners go hand in hand with poor spelling and grammar.

Me too, frequently. I also experimented with a slight bow and "I live to serve" for a while...

One can sound thankful or sarcastic.
It’s all in the tone of voice/body language, just when you mean it, sound sincere.

How could you tell they'd left that all important apostrophe out? It was very perceptive of you.
