I noticed a large van on the M40 last night, unmarked except for the words 'Coroners Ambulance' in small letters. Is this a technical term for something specifically to do with the coroner? Or just how bodies get from the place of death to the undertakers?

This.

For years I saw a black merc type van with the lettering 'private ambulance' on the side around where I lived and I always wondered who the fk calls for a private ambulance, took me ages to realise.

They're used to transport bodies that have been referred to the coroner, ie where a doctor hasn't been able to sign a death certificate.

All undertaker have private ambulances, most are not labeled as such. They are used to collect the dead, as a hearse is a bit off putting outside a care home.

I still have horrendous visions of one of these private ambulance parked on the street outside a funeral directors...

Back doors lying open and 8 bodies covered with just a sheet in full view at the side of a busy footpath.

I probably felt more for the dignity of those inside rather than a distaste for what I was witnessing..

Don't watch the TV programme from a few years ago showing how the Co-Op Funeral Service stored bodies in their 'warehouses'. At least the deceased don't mind!

How did the OP think dead bodies got from place of death to mortuary or undertakers, on the bus ?

People's shameless ignorance of basic life experiences is as hilarious as it is pathetic.

The Op asks does a van marked"Coroners Ambulance" move dead bodies to an undertakers basically.
They don't!
Undertakers vans do that. They are unmarked and not marked "Coroners Ambulance".

It can't be that difficult. Can it?

I KNEW PERFECTLY WELL IT WAS IN DISCREET VANS BECAUSE ONE OF MY RELATIVES WAS TRANSPORTED 200 MILES FROM A HOSPITAL MORTUARY TO AN UNDERTAKERS

WHAT I WAS QUERYING WAS WHETHER THE TERM 'CORONERS AMBULANCE' REFERRED TO ANY SUCH A TRANSPORT OR WHETHER IT SPECIFICALLY REFFERED TO A VEHICLE ASSOCIATED WITH CORONERS

JESUS FUC KING CHRIST:
Moderate your language please,

Did the words "Coroners" and " Ambulance " not give you a clue it was a conveyance used by a coroner ?

You must be tedious company if you need the simplest things explained.

When the mother of a friend died he arranged for one of the local undertakers to collect her. A little while later he realised that he had contacted the wrong undertaker and meant to use a different local undertaker. The result being he had to ask the correct undertaker to collect her body from the wrong one.

I have always had this vision of the them carrying her body down the High Street between undertakers biggrin

this happens more often than you would imagine. Not the carrying down the high street, but collecting from one undertaker to another. If the police need a body collected from somewhere they will call the local undertaker and the family may then choose a different undertaker later. They also may not have enough storage and use someone else's fridge.
