Hello all I'm a long time lurker

Unfortunately I lost my Mum two weeks ago to the dreaded big C and would like to raise some money to go to the two charities that helped not only mum but us all as a family in her last few weeks with us.

I'm looking to do a sponsored something but really cant decide, my son is going to do the 3 peak in 24 hours challenge which i will help out on i.e doing the driving between the peaks .

So I'm asking the collective for your suggestions for something a little bit challenging for me to do.

Over to you

Andy

Skydive. Some people seem to think it is not fun but scary.

Are you looking to do something on your own as these organisations tend to have charity events like bike rides, runs, golf days and the like throughout the year?

And sorry to hear about your mum, it's just over 2 years since we lost my mum so you have my sympathies.

Wing walking, abseiling, climbing, bungee, run, cycle, swim...

Or are you after a specific known challenge like the 3 peaks?

How about something your mum would have been proud of you for?

If, when she was alive, you had gone home and told her you had done a half marathon or a coast to coast walk she would have acknowledged your achievement.

There are plenty of other ways to help the charities concerned. Volunteering or spending time collecting for them at fetes etc.
Your time can be valuable to these organisations, its not always about the money.

Is your dad still about?

I’m sure your mum would love it if you took him away on holiday and bunged the charity a cheque for xxx

Sorry to hear about mum

Cheers

Contact the charities and see if they have any literature to help you.

They may have suggestions for what to do, sponsor forms, t shirts etc...

Also try to involve your work. I know my company sometimes matches donations.

If it's a physical challenge how about coast to coast bike ride or walking the Pennine Way (that will take some tie smile )

Sorry for your loss.

Have you thought about Ultra White Collar Boxing?

Meet some people there in similar situations, raise money, get fit, give your friends / family a good night out and raise money for CRUK.

I've done it - thoroughly enjoyed it. May not be everyones cup of tea. The first time I signed up, I had a few ribs broken in training, but this was a bit of a rough / tough extra paid session and that really knocked me back confidence wise...signed up again and got into it.

I'll caveat that there are people that do it just for the boxing side, some people have done quite a few events but just aren't good enough to do any semi pro boxing. All this varies location to location.

A charity golf day? Most courses host these very regularly.

Just get a price from the club (whole package, golf, dinner etc) then add £x to the cost per person for charity donation, prizes etc. Then it's a case of advertising it and taking the money. Sometimes the event coordinator at the club will do a lot of the work for you.

The real money spinner is to have a charity auction during/after dinner post golf in the club house. Approach local businesses to donate items/services and pretty much 100% of the proceeds can go to charity as the golfers will have paid for the venue/dinner.

The key thing would be getting appropriately wealthy individuals involved and most importantly, a likeable and persuasive auctioneer.

Hi

Sorry for your loss, I lost my Mum to this in 2013, and in 2014 I raised over £8k for Marie Curie (with some help from PH)

I shaved my hair off, well actually I let people that wanted to come to the pub pay to shave it off. I'm a girl, and I had long hair, and I did it before the McMillan 'brave the shave' campaign started.

My top tip - people get very bored of 'sponsor me' requests - so do something to capture imaginations and make it personal. Some people ask every other month for sponsorship to do a Marathon/Triathalon/Muddy Run etc - which means we are sponsoring their 'hobby'. I promised I would never ask for any sponsorship again (and I hadn't before).
