Ive got this good mate, ive known him for 20 years and he is a great guy but has a compulsive obsession of talking utter crap. He started his own company 10 years ago and I think he does ok out of it. The other week he told me he was selling the company for 200k, then the story changed to 100k, then the next minute he said its all been locked away in a special saving fund for 2 years that will give him £50k interest. Then he was on the phone telling me he has a new deal on his mortgage and taken a bit more out so he can get new carpet fitted.
Today he is on the phoning moaning about Thomas Cook going bust and that he cant afford to rebook anywhere else and will have to get a loan.

Also he was telling me his gf is on £80k a year. I saw her at the weekend. She said she wants out her job as she is sick of it, i said what do you do? She works as a secretary. It's bizarre behaviour and it annoys me.
Why do I care you might ask? Well it annoys me he cant just be straight and 'normal' and I wouldn't think any less or more of him if he hasn't a bean to rub between his wotsits.

Good mates don't lie to best friends.

Sounds like he needs help.

Otherwise get a new friend.

Is he truly a friend? That's what id be asking myself.
If he lies about this kind of stuff....what else is he lying about. Mind you can keep him at arms length and just take it for what it is....utter Bean Wotsit… some people just like to think theyre keeping up with the imaginary "Mr Jones".... we have a fella at work who talks Codswallop, I find him entertaining. Especially when you make a mockery of what hes said and catch him out... at the moment hes been telling people he is going to train as a boxer.... he gets blown over by a sharp gust of wind at football so il look forward to his first fight.... definitely wont go for ringside seats...

I know several people like that, perhaps I just attract them. I wouldn't bother calling them out on stuff, it's not worth the argument. If it's someone you get on with well enough, it doesn't really matter in the scheme of things - there are very few people around that are 100% honest about everything, all of the time. The kind of stuff you mention doesn't really have any impact - if he was lying in that way to get you to invest in his business or something that would have a significant effect on yourself, then it would be quite different of course.

I have a friend that we refer to as 'Spacey' Rob. Even sober he is away with the fairies with stories like 'flat' earth theories, 'man didn't land on the moon' etc., and always has an unknown mate who bought a new V8 A8 for pennies through a 'deal' etc etc.

Stick a beer in him and the skies the limit !

I used to drink with an oldish guy called Pete (RIP).

I assumed he was in the sort of wise 'old country type' mould, but I realised that what I mistook was knowledge was in fact utter stubbornness when it came to admitting being wrong.

The penny dropped when we invited him on to our pub quiz team, and he argued vociferously that almost every male in the picture round was Seb Coe.

My favourite was insisting (even when I got the relevant bits of the Highway Code up on my phone) that the NSL on all B roads was 50 mph. Despite him not having a driving licence.

I knew someone who was into bikes (so should have known better) but insisted that Triumph are owned by Kawasaki, just cannot see where he got that from. Also heard of someone else who assumed they were part of BMW but if they weren't into bikes I can just about see why they might think that.

What a lardaceous fopdoodle the OP is.

So he exaggerates a bit or deflects from the actuality , who don't ?

Men do it all he time, without even knowing it, it harks back to cavemen days.

I think you'll find I am not far off the actual truth.

My ex best friend was also like this. He worked in the police. Probably the biggest liar I've ever known. Always buying a Ferrari or lambo. He got sacked from the police for having a Tommy tank and filming it then showing female colleagues who reported him. He used to be PH. Not sure if he still uses it. Last time I spoke to him he told me he was kn 45k a week doing computer recycling. I told him he was talking rubbish and he never spoke to me again. He was good fun to listen to but you couldnt have any type of conversation without him lieing. It was like he was ill.

It's baffling sometimes where people get some of this bks from. I do believe BMW do own Triumph cars trademark so can kind of understand the second one.

There's a big difference between exaggerating a bit (which not everybody does) and saying something provably rubbish.

In any case, what did cavemen tell exaggerated stories about? And how do you know?

Same chap built a car and it was the fastest in the UK and top gear were going to use it but it was too fast. He used to say he was in MI5 as well. It was very strange. Once he said he set up a business doing business cards and BMW uk were using him as their sole agent. He made this letter and showed us down the pub. It was all made up. Funny but highly strange.

I don't get this. But then PH is apparently full of compulsive liars according to some.

My missus had a work colleague who turned out to be lying about literally everything, and it came tumbling down like a house of cards.

IIRC he was intermittently off sick/going for tests with suspected cancer, the long commute from miles away was killing him, etc. etc. On one occasion he'd pointed out a house when on a business trip and said that was his but he didn't want to go and disturb the wife who worked nights.

He stumbled when he said he was getting chemo at a local hospital and a colleague questioned why (a) if he lived miles away he was getting treatment near work and (b) that as far as they were aware said hospital didn't do chemotherapy.

Then it all started unravelling - he disappeared from work entirely without the correct sick note from the doctor and went incommunicado, then his wife turned up at work saying he hadn't come home for a week. It turned out he lived quite locally, and as far as she was aware he didn't have any cancer. Oh, and she didn't work nights either.

The more sensible posts so far.

I have met a couple of 'delusional' people as described in this thread, usually through work or via other unavoidable circumstances, and they are absolutely unbearable.

I'm one of these really boring, logical people who is a stickler for facts and information, and who occationally will quiz someone on the finer details of whatever story they are relaying.

Once I work out that someone is clearly a liar, bullstter, tall story teller etc I just have to avoid them like the plague as their blatant nonsense drives me mad.

The world is full of interesting people who really did ride a Skidoo from their chalet whilst pissed, to a bar at the top of Les Trois Vallees, order a bottle of £1000 champagne and then end up doing a karaoke sing along with Elton John. There is simply no need to tolerate the rubbish of Keith from Luton who said he met the queen the other day and he used to be in the SAS.

You can probably tell I have no time for these sorts.

The PH compulsive liars thing is a funny one, and it baffles me at times.

I've seen stories that I would consider fairly common like 'I banged a young admin girl at work' met with claims of 'liar' from PH when to be honest, I've seen that sort of thing happen loads in real life.

This makes me smile.

Used to have a relative who tell everyone about the heroic things he did in WW2, but he was nine when WW2 started!
