Was watching "Sun Sea and A and E" and this slightly dopey couple in hospital with him being the patient due to excessive alcohol consumption, stomach pumped the lot, so he claims he had his drink spiked but the hospital just said he had gone too far with the drinking. Utter cretin then comes out after nearly dying, wanting a fag and to go to the nearest bar for yet more alcohol.

I hear a lot of folk claim to have been spiked but how often does it happen, who does it and what with ? I am sure it happens but feel like a large proportion of people who claim it just got wasted and want to blame persons unknown for a sinister act rather than just admitting they got hammered and made a mess/fool of themselves ?

You ever been spiked ?

I concur. I suspect its a symptom of the 'U ok Hun?' generation who have to make a crisis out of any situation. I'm sure people do have their drinks spiked but I suspect it's very rare by comparison to all the people who claim that this is what happened to them.

I used to know a couple of cid officers through work, they told me in our small city they had yet to find an example of anyone having their drink spiked.

Excessive alcohol intake was the usual culprit, however a lot was still down to taking drugs themselves and either not wanting to admit they’d done so or not being able to verify what they’d actually taken. Ie, girl gets offered white powder thinking it’s cocaine and it turns out to be some form of tranquilliser that reacts badly with the already copious amounts of alcohol taken.

Obviously that’s not to say it doesn’t and has not happened, it’s just they’ve never seen it.

Many years ago; many, many years ago, on a mate's stag night, he asked me ( as I was Best Man) to watch out for "Dave" who had a bit of a reputation for these things.
After a while he asked me how he was behaving. I said, "He's been spiking your beer with vodka, but it's ok as I've been swapping it for his when he wasn't looking angel"

Groom, "st! He's supposed to be driving us home" getmecoat

Interesting topic. I was under the naive impression that ‘spiking drinks’ was very early 2000’s and had disappeared.

However, recently (last 12 months) 2 friends have claimed their drinks to be spiked. Both unable to walk and being sick over and over.

What made me think that it’s a pill rather than excessive consumption was that it happened to quickly.

Both times were down as the duck and goose in Cirencester, I mentioned it the people who work there but to no avail.

It happened to one of my daughters, fortunately her friends realised and looked after her. Unfortunately however none of the taxis would take bring her home so she ended up being bought home by the cop

She has no recollection of the whole night whatsoever...

I read an article that said out of every 10 people that go to a&e saying their drinks have been spiked, only 1 or maybe 2 actually have anything other than alcohol in them.

Which means she was offered something, took it thinking it was coke and it was actually ket’.

I’d hazard a guess your response will be, ‘she’d never do that, aware of the dangers of drugs, blah, blah’.

Never actually know of anyone who has had their drink ‘spiked’.

Was at a corporate do at York races in the posh bit a couple of Octobers ago. Someone on our table got his drink spiked and ended up at A&E. Fortunately the CCTV picked it up and the offender was dealt with. Seems he got the wrong drink and instead of spiking the girl next to him, he got a different guy.

That's probably because when people explain it to you you just stick your fingers in your ears and go 'la la la not listening'.

Spiked with what; sneaky extra shots such as vodka or drugs ?

Spiking with surreptitious shots me & mates used to do it a lot (amongst ourselves, not to strangers)

With drugs; yes to me, 'flat mates' when at uni thought it'd be such a laugh to spike my drinks at our Xmas shindig with LSD.

Such a shame they lost their deposits when we left at the end of the year as I may, or may not, have left the place a bit untidy (being the last one out).

Why would I do that?

Just my own experience, easy to blame someone else for your own mistakes, especially when that person doesn’t exist.

I remember whilst on holiday we rushed a friend to hospital who had been spiked, in reality he’d just drank too much and was extremely ill!

My guess is some may be down to fake alcohol?

https://www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/staying-safe-w...

"“Commonly used substitutes for ethanol include chemicals used in cleaning fluids, nail polish remover and automobile screen wash, as well as methanol and isopropanol which are used in antifreeze and some fuels. These other types of alcohol can produce similar effects to ethanol in terms of making you feel tipsy. But they are also potentially very dangerous.”
Drinking alcohol containing these chemicals can cause nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, drowsiness and dizziness. It can also lead to kidney or liver problems and even coma. Methanol, a substance which can be used in fake vodka, may cause permanent blindness."

I had a night as a fairly seasoned drinker as a student where I had 4 pints (so my friends say) and then became a blubbering mess like none of them had ever seen before. Being students we drank frequently and all knew who could hold a drink and no one had ever seen me in such a mess even after a lot more, they had to carry me home at the time and I remember nothing at all of it.

I don't know, why would you?

I've seen my kids trollied, I know how drunk looks and this definitely wasn't alcohol. Now I'm not going to write you a 42 page incident report about the lads trying to get her out of the club merely to justify my position, but I've done most things in my time and I understand how people behave.

But you just keep your blinkers on...

Yep, had it happen to me many years ago.

In what I believe to be a reputable pub but drinking with a crowd I didn't normally associate with, had 2/3 pints then started to feel extremely spaced out so rang partner to pick me up. During the phone call she could tell how bad it was as I could tell her the name of the pub but couldn't tell here where it was literally around the corner from where we had previously lived.

Managed to get in the car then much after that can't recall much till the next day.

See my point above. Quite possible a dodgy club has bought cheap/fake booze to increase profits. So not spiked, but fake alcohol. They may not even have been aware if the reseller was doing it; the fakes can be very hard to spot.

Ah, I'm so sorry I must have been mistaken. I guess benzos and roofies just aren't available any more.

You often hear of people going blind on holiday as they have been drinking methanol in their drinks instead of ethanol

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-47253162

A while back some chavs broke into a outbuilding on allotments near me and drunk some spirits (turps?), one ended up dying and the other was in a bad way with organ failure.
The owner was investigated by the police as they thought it may have been deliberately left in there as a trap.
