It doesn't matter whether you're in, out or you're shaking it all about but Brexit is looming larger - in whatever shape it eventually takes - and SWMBO has suggested we get some extra bags of pasta in 'in case of shortages'...

I'll take advantage of her instructions to stock up on some extra bottles of Malt at the same time but what does the panel think would actually be a good idea to stockpile in the lead up to Brexit?

My opinion is that it'll sort out fairly quickly but there will be some - possibly considerable - disruption in the first 6 weeks or so which will taper off as new systems & Customs procedures get the bugs ironed out over the next 6 months, but who knows - I may be wrong and have need of stockpiled water purification tabs, beef jerky and toilet rolls...

So what are you stockpiling? smile

IBTL?

Anyway, a mate at a council tells me that they have plans to ration fuel if it all goes belly up. This being PH and all...

Government stockpiling medicine and ammunition (yes really) and fuel

At a more practical level- whilst your order of bratwurst might be a bit more difficult to get (probably), didn’t we fight a couple of wars on rations? A few bags of pasta in your cupboard won’t help you that much unless she’s foreseeing WW2 like disruption.. things might be a bit more difficult if she’s a lactose intolerant vegan IG star though...a good single malt might help though. Good idea.

(But seriously, medicines), if the government are stockpiling that...

I read a similar thread on another forum, I think the consensus was Ginsters pasties, Pukka pies and baked beans and lots of them.

If I were in the marketing dept for an foods/ FMCG company - I would be out there touting "Because Brexit - there will be shortages"

I thought toilet paper was a genuine concern. Also something that's easily stockpiled!

Haven't really considered stockpiling, managed fine on a Scottish island through bad winters and in foreign countries with poor logistics and no constant supply of some things.

With no medicine or similar requirements I should be fine (although a lack of petrol would hurt as I'm commuting by car for the first time!).

If Morrisions is your main supermarket I'd suggest most non perishable groceries.

Nothing as such, however for the last six months or so our overflow/spare food cupboard has been renamed the Brexit cupboard and will probably remain that way long after the event!

We've got tons of coffee beans in stock plus Mrs DS has stockpiled a lot of extra tinned stuff.
Personally I will be filling up all cars and motorbikes as well as getting all jerrycans filled with diesel for my car - fuel I think is the biggest and most genuine risk.

Is it not that the things likely to be impacted are the things they cant easily be stockpiled. Fresh veg etc

So officially NHS providers were categorically told not to stockpile anything, however the actual situation is that most trusts I've worked with (which is in double digits) this year are actually stockpiling various items ... A main one being PPE (gloves specifically) and some specific meds which are expected to be challenging to get hold of in the coming weeks.

Personally I am not stockpiling anything, I could do with losing a few lbs so rationing wouldn't be a bad thing lol

Ha! I think we still have some from when the 4 year old liked them. Then went off them in the way that only kids can. She's now 9...

Yup, I think some people will go into meltdown at not being able to get a particular delicacy when in fact there's plenty of food around.

I'd heard that about toilet paper too, it's low value but high volume so the supermarkets prefer to use that space for higher value lines. I think there'll be panic buying of fuel (which as PHers we'll doubtless add to, can't be seen walking!) but I suspect not as bad as the tanker strike, it'll settle back down.

Fresh fruit & veg, much of which comes from Europe will be an issue till Customs arrangements sort themselves out. Ultimately, people will still want to trade with people, so it will sort itself out but you might not get out of season produce for a while. Nothing wrong with spuds & carrots though!

Thanks for a good thread peeps, glad it didn't descent into the rights & wrongs arguments that have been done to death. I try to maintain the attitude that this is all Comedy Gold and the World will keep spinning whilst my dear wife is starting to stress... smile

Reminds me of post Threads 1980s. Mum was convinced we needed to stockpile water and did so in the attic. As a small child my fear was that I would survive the nuclear holocaust but end up being crushed to death by a pallets worth of Perrier.

On a more relevant note I have renewed my prescription (of French made drugs) a few weeks earlier than usual. Better safe than sorry.

Toilet paper is one of the things the NHS are worried about and have had several calls about ... Believe it or not!

OK, how am I meant to walk to work? 70 miles.
Yeah, it's all great! We can live on spuds and carrots. Why?
