Folks

It’s my sons first birthday soon and I really want to buy him a toy car that he can sit in and be transported around in until he works out how to do it himself.

I would appreciate some assistance from the PH collective if they have know of some good options to consider?

Thanks in advance!

CB

Check out Scarlets garage on YouTube. I went down to see Stuart at Vmax Scart and saw some of the cars in his workshop, they were things of beauty.

They may be a bit much at 1 year old but you never know.

When my children were that age I had a little plastic car with a handle that fitted in the rear so I could push it along. By the time they were old enough to really be able to propel it and steer it themselves it was too small for them.
So my experience is if you want one you can push around and is small enough to support a 1 year old then don't worry too much about if they will be able to use it unaided as by then you will need to buy a larger one anyway.

Admittedly not a car but when they were young our kids absolutely loved these things. I think they quite enjoy being near to ground level and in the open to see what's going on around them. Great for parents too as far less faff to push around than a pushchair.

The idea is that they grow with it so you pushing them around initially but as they get to age where they want to pedal / steer the foot rest can be retracted, the pedals engaged and even the handle removed if you're in an open space somewhere.

You need something with a handle as has been pictured above otherwise your back will be in bits.

And as a phase 2, do it properly, buy some Toylander plans, get cracking and you'll have finished it when he's 2, the age at which my lad started driving it.

not pretty but a Cozy Coupe works well from 1 onwards. They can sit in it and be pushed around from 1 and then once they can push themselves along they are free to move around themselves.

How about an electric ride on car from somewhere like here for example:

Go for a 12v version. Most are RC so you can drive it until your son is big enough to drive it himself. Most likely all have seatbelts so will be safe.

I bought one of these for my son's 1st birthday.

He needed to grow into it but soon got the hang of it. He's 3 now and still loves charging about the house on it.

Edited to add: You can get them for less if you shop around.

Seconded. Ours gets any car related stickers added to it, e.g. BOM, Merlin Motorsport, Nitron etc. I also ordered some rally window style stickers, so his name is on it.

we have a electric Audi TT for our daughter.

It was bought when she was 2 though ... it can be remote controlled like an r/c car until they are ready to take the pedals themselves - she loves it and its had quite some use and took a bit of a battering (as has the dog but thankfully he learned quickly to avoid it!)

Yep, not as exciting as some of the offering on here but our kids both loved these too. And more importantly, the raised handle means that you don't give yourself permanent back ache pushing them around.

The old classic Little Tykes red/yellow car was popular in the garden too.
