I'm off to Cuba next month, and looking at the climate data there is the chance of catching the odd brief but heavy shower. I'm after a decent quality, lightweight, breathable jacket to take with me. Would also be good for dog walking etc at home. I'm quite a warm blooded person and I have heavy parkers/Barbour etc, so I really want something lightweight and very breathable.

I was thinking about the Rab Downpour Plus:

https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/15898287/rab-men-s-do...

...or the Fjern Skjold...

https://www.sportpursuit.com/catalog/product/view/...

...although Fjern is one of Sportpursuit's own brands which puts me off a little.

Any other options? Budget of £130 max really.

Thanks in advance!

I've got a nice Musto jacket that I picked up at one of their outlet stores a couple of years ago, really keeps the wind and rain off well without being too heavy. I got it for a lovely £65 but at their outlet in Portsmouth I saw the newer version now seems to be £120-ish so within your budget

Benefit also that it's just a nice navy jacket so you don't look like a plonker wearing a big orange sailing jacket in the high street

Dear, but the best.

Linky?

I'm actually a sailor so have a number of Musto jackets but they are all way heavier than what I'm looking for. Looking for something super lightweight and packable...do they do one?

Cheap and cheerful, but I have one of these which is fine for wet & windy dog walking. Need to add layers if it's cold though: Corvo jacket.

ETA missed the bit about packing small - maybe too bulky.

Decathlon do a fell-running style jacket that should do what you want. Light and folds up small, 10k waterproof rating, tapped seems, reasonable breathablity rating. Its £55.

Lighter than the Rab, similar 2.5 layer construction.

Looks great but over twice the weight of the Rab. I've got a TNF jacket that is very similar (must be over 10 years old now), but I don't think either of those are going to pack down really small.

if you want something that's going to last and is light and packable then Arcteryx Beta is a very high quality shell that's going to last a long time.

But for a singe trip, something you might never use TBH I would just go with something cheap and cheerful and you wont worry if it gets lost or left behind etc.

I've got the Fjern jacket you mention and its excellent. None of them are bad really these days, pretty much all use the same tech at each price point, just which you prefer the look and feel of.

I have one of these for mountain marathons https://www.montane.co.uk/mens-c1/minimus-stretch-...

Packs down to the size of an apple and whilst I wouldn't want to rely on it for a full day on the hill, it's never let me down or got me wet yet.

They do!

I've got a few Mustos including a Fenland Packable, which is very nice. Some of the BR1 jackets are actually lighter though, fer instance:

Depends. Do you want to look like you're climbing K2? If you do, get the Berghaus.

If you don't, work on the assumption that it's a tropical country and most locals won't be wearing a Berghaus Gore-Tex.

Instead, they're likely to either not go out when it's raining, or carry an umbrella if they do.

Personally, I'd get a cheap umbrella when I was there if I was caught in a shower. When it rains, find the nearest bar and wait it out, drinking the £120 you've saved on a waterproof jacket.

If you already have a lightweight coat you could try waterproofing it

OK this isn't "super lightweight" then, it won't pack down like I think you want, its gore-tex lined so it has another layer but it will take up as much space as a hoodie when you pack it down

Go here.
I have several items of their stuff and very good.
Been using them for years and their clothing lasts unless physically damaged....grrrrr
www.rohan.co.uk
I was in Ambleside a couple of years ago and was looking for a shirt. Discontinued.....but the shop assistant checked the warehouse and they still had one in my size. Took my address and posted it there. Great service.
I always browse their sales too. Good bargains.
