This just makes my blood boil of how some people think its OK to blatantly flout a system in society today. How much time and effort was wasted by airport staff, cabin crew and potential delay just because this woman wanted to save $41 and "fight the system".....

In this case, as a travel writer, I reckon she should be banned by this airline.

I guess in oz they don’t have body scanners on internal flights

You certainly wouldn’t try that in USA or uk

Its a function of human behavior where the "penalty" for the excess seems grossly disproportionate.

A few years ago I went away to Greece for a week, naturally used some of the toiletries and didn't bring anything new back - I was fine going out, then somehow 3 kg over my hold baggage allowance - I had chosen not to carry a cabin bag which would have given me another 6kg or so.

Asked for discretion on this point and was not permitted it, they demanded £50....10% of the pp holiday cost. Somewhat aggrieved and supported by some of the others around me i went into my case, put on 5 T-shirts, a pair of shorts and a pair of jeans and swapped my flip flops to trainers to bring me back onto the baggage limit. Much to the check-in girls disgust she had no option but to check the bag in as normal. Through security I got a bag at duty free, put all the clothes I'd put on into it and carried it on as my hand luggage. Absolutely no difference but a lot more hassle.
