Mods... Not sure which section to post this in.

I want to buy a scooter for my 14 year old to commute to school ~2 miles. Not sure what features are good, reliable brands? price ~ anything up to £50-100.

I had one of these branded items 15 years ago.

As Sc0tt said, Micro are the company that started the alu small wheeled scooters in the early 2000s- quality is excellent. A number of similar/copycats out there too.

Chili scooters are apparently the in thing if you were considering doing tricks, taking to skate parks etc.- much more sturdy (fully welded/non foldable)

Bigger wheels can be better, especially for the distances you mention- also makes the scooters more stable. Smaller wheels don't need much of a bump/crack/pothole to stop dead (and risk a face plant)

All this being said, 2 miles each way will be pretty knackering for the leg muscles on the moving leg.

I was thinking that too, and from personal experience, 14 year old boys can be first class dipsticks with little or no road sense. Also not great for meeting girls who may not be that impressed.

A push bike or a bus pass might be better, or even going with another boy in the parental car.

Buy him a bike! 2 miles worth of exercise is nothing.

was this request from your son, or your idea? I agree with going down the bicycle route rather than a scooter route. You might have to up the budget a fair bit though once you add on things like the lock, helmet, lights etc.

This was a request from my boy. Some of his friends have them.

They currently walk the 2 miles ~ 25-30 mins. I only drive them if its raining. As a previous roadie myself, 2 miles is hardly worth the effort to bike ( unlock, tuck in trouser legs or clips, put on helmet an gloves, bike, get bike in shed, then I'll have to clean it every so often). I know the scooter will only be a little more efficient than walking.

If his friends have them then just ask him which one he wants.

It'll be on gumtree / skip in less than a year.

Look at some of the Decathlon scooters. Most normal scooters are clangy clattery things. Some of the Decathlon ones have slightly bigger wheels and front suspension.

You need to ask him which one is cool.
If you buy the wrong brand he won't want to use it, he wants to fit in with his mates so the scooter needs to be the one that fits in.
