Sign of the times?

Quite
really? I get it, I don’t want to be held up by ‘one under’ but that’s a big statement:CharlieH89 said:
Sounds like some sort of Jehovas Witness Christmas push. (Push might be the wrong word)There’s always a rise in suicides on the railway on the run up to Christmas and there’s also a big push within the industry to approach people who look vulnerable and just engage them in conversation whilst proper help is organised.
A number of TOCs also engage rail pastors who patrol the railway and try to talk to anyone (don’t have to be suicidal) who wants to engage with them.
Sometimes just a quiet word and listening can radically change an outcome.

My dad worked in an office near the Southampton itchen toll bridge (Southampton’s suicide spot of choice)
They’d often walk over the bridge at lunch etc
A scary amount of them came across people who after talking together changed their mind and realised it wasn’t as bad as they’d worked themselves up
My wife and I came across a young fella on the bridge over the m27 a few years back, can’t imagine what sad thoughts are going on in their minds

It's a very good sign of the times. A sign that we give a toss (but also a sign that TOCs don't want the revenue loss which accompanies every person struck by a train, if we're being cynical). Just FYI, there's at last one a day every day, not just over the Christmas period.
I had a girl try to kill herself 3 months ago right infront of me. Just jumped on to the track as an Express was due.
I tried speaking to her but she was deaf so I had to run into the office to get the trains stopped. By the time I ran back out with the phone in my hand the express train had shot through my station.
Luckily she was lying on the platform edge in hysterics after deciding not to go through with it.
2 weeks later I seen her in Tesco in the same clothes she was in on the day of the attempted suicide. I ran to security to tell them to keep an eye on her. He did and 10 minutes later found her in the toilets with a bag and a belt that she had stolen from the clothes section. Had stopped her just in time.
Another incident whilst I was in work roughly 7 years ago. A lad was threatening to jump off my station roof which is located about 80ft above the track. He had broke up with his girlfriend, took some drugs. Had issues in the past but was clean until that night.
Fortunately he came down and spoke to me on the steps to the station.

It happens every month sadly. We have a monthly newsletter with thanks or well done to members of staff and there are 3 or 4 most months where a member of staff has helped someone not take their lives. It’s a sad thing. I’ve been on 9 years and have never had it on my station other than the incidents above but have had it happens at the next station along and services come to a stand still.
There are some cold hearted b
ds out there when it comes to trains being cancelled and that is the reason but 99% of people understand and make alternative arrangements. Some moan and say some horrible words. ApOrbital said:
