I’m a builder so my work skills, such as they are, do have a benefit at home, such as not having to deal with builders (!) built my extension, garage, decking etc. no building maintenance bills. Do your skills have any relevance outside of work and does it have a downside e.g you powerfully built IT types getting roped in to sort out aunty Mable’s pc, because ‘Little Timmy always liked his computers’. biggrin

Yep, IT here, and it's no use at home.

And as for aunt Mable, I just ask if they're installing an Oracle ERP system. After the blank look they give me I just say it's the only thing I know so I can't help them.

Flying instructor and aircraft engineer.

Instructing skills were handy when daughter was learning how to drive & I was supervising her practice outside lessons. Also made the cost of driving lessons seem incredibly cheap ....

If you spend time spannering aircraft then it's hard to get too stressed about taking a hammer (other tools are available) to the boiler!

Mechanic/auto electrician.

Translates pretty well to various diy and building tasks and a fair amount of crossover for tools as well.

I work in audit, so I don't use a shred of my work at home - completely useless.

Not unless I suddenly want to build a 200 unit housing estate in my back garden.

I'm a self employed consultant who manages building/development projects, regeneration projects, legal matters relating to property/housing, and so on.

IT, but I'm also very practical and can turn my hand to most tasks...plastering, brick laying, electrical, painting, car maintenance etc.
The only thing I can't do is cook...something I'm working on.

Exactly the same for me. My dad was a builder, he'd find a run don property in a great location, we'd move into the house for what felt like 10 minutes, then into a caravan in the garden as he pulled it down and rebuilt. Then we'd move in for short period and on to the next. So I grew around building and latterly, laying gas and water mains. Quickly realised this type of work would kill me!

Ended up in IT, albeit nowadays a non-technical role. I'm client facing, I would argue that many of the skills I use day to day are transferable to my home/personal life. Getting people to do things they don't necessarily want to do, that about explain a large part of home life!

There are times when I envy the tangible aspect of trades and builders but it's certainly graft that's for sure. Except for plumbers, they just fk, everybody hates them.

Can cook a small number of basic dishes but I absolutely hate it.

I'm a composer. Utterly useless unless the Mrs wants me to sing the harmony to a TV theme.

So utterly useless.

Yes to an extent, I'm an IT Project Manager so I'm very good at organising tasks when doing projects at home, thankfully my dad was a Joiner by trade and passed on a lot of practical skills so I can generally carry out the tasks I plan with a degree of competence. I'm also reasonable good with most tech as I had a technical background before moving into Project Management so I do get called on regularly to fix friends and neighbours computers.

Accountant,

I do the wife and kids’ tax returns plus constant requests from family/friends for financial advice/assistance. Pretty much every weekend is spent doing somebody’s accounts.
