re stocking a river of fish

so reading our local newsletter the river near me used to have fish in and people caught them to eat. now there are no fish due to the run offs from fields apparently.

how do you go about re stocking it with fish? anyone have a clue? seems a nice eco thing to do

If there's still runoff creating eutrophication (crikey, there's a word I've not used since gcse geography 20 years ago!) - then there is no point.

Insufficient oxygen to support fish stocks.

So, that first.

Then, I've seen reports of the appropriate fish species being farmed to create a starting population, which is released into the river.

From there, with careful management they should rebuilt their own stocks over a decade or so.

Depending on where you are, the local environment agency might take an interest, if you wanted to sort the river out. They are very hot on soil runoff around here and occasionally active in restocking rivers. I'd make sure it's not your land that the runoff is from before you ring them though.

Cormorants and fish theft are the main culprits around here on the rivers!

The canals used to get stocked by fishing clubs. They gave up when the Zander found their way into the system a couple of decades ago.

I have now spotted Cormorants taking Zander on the canal … and will decimate them in no time at all!
