Getting a start Offshore

Could anyone tell me how difficult it is to get offshore as a roustabout nowadays?


I am looking to build some offshore experience whilst I apply for graduate offshore engineering roles, but I don't want to jump into paying for my north sea certifications if they're not taking on any unexperienced hires.

It is difficult, oil and gas has been hit hard over the last few years and experienced people are out of work. However if you know people who work offshore they can help and advise. Some companies will pay for all your certs but this is usually if you need to go offshore in an existing role. Roustabouts have a tough job, always on the move and not treated well in some places. If you have a trade background that is much better, graduate in technical areas is certainly the way to go. I have been offshore for over twenty years, initially through my trade but now as a manager (OIM). Depending on your age there are lots of entry schemes run by the multinationals and certainly that route is a good way to go.
To pay for your own certs is over £2000 plus hotels and then you need a company willing to take you on. North sea is great to work, regular, safe and proper training.
