Help - assigning a plate that’s on retention.

I’ve purchased a number plate form a guy who has it on retention. He’s going to send me the retention document.

Can I add the plate to the car on the dvla website or will i need to send the retention doc to the dvla for them to add my name ?

when I did it recently he had to assign it straight to my car when changing ownership
