Last night I checked how much it would cost on the train from Newbury in Berkshire to Havant in Hampshire. £24.60 return off peak with my old folks railcard. Excellent. This morning I set off.

"Hello, I'd like a day return to Havant using my Senior Railcard, please."
"Do you need the Underground?"
"No thanks."
"That will be £17.80."
"Oh, good, better than I thought. I expect it's more going to Havant via London. I was expecting to change at Reading and Guildford."
"Where are you going?"
"Havant."
"I thought you said Paddington."

Thank Christ for that, although I
was quite sure that it wasn’t me.

But he is right in the sense that are already far too many threads about buying train tickets in Newbury. Irrespective of their destination.

Her "That's £7.95 - have you been here before?"

Many years ago I went to a coffee shop at Stansted and for the first time ever in my life ordered an expresso instead of a latte.

When the nice lady placed it on the counter in its tiny little cup, I took one look, told her it was a rip off and walked away, leaving the expresso on the counter.

When I got home my other half explained what an expresso was paperbag

So to that lady at the Costa Coffee at Stansted airport, I apologise unreservedly.

In M&S, returning an item my wife bought, for £19.99, paid in cash, as per receipt.

Young lad serving: No problem sir, that's £19.99 back.
Me: here's a penny.
YL: (laughing at me as if I'm an idiot) no sir, I have to pay you.
Me: Yes, here's a penny, give me £20.
YL: I can't do that, I have to give you what she paid.
Me:She would have given a £20 note, and got change.
YL: Sorry, i have to give you £19.99. (proceeds to give me £15 in notes and £4.99 in coins.
Me: Thanks. (adding my penny to it)..can you change this for a £20 note?
YL: of course.

In Tesco I asked at the Information Desk if they had any cloves. The young lady adopted her I'm-Dealing-With-A-Special-Person expression and slowly inclined her head towards the adjacent F&F Clothing aisles.

Regrding Old people and hot weather last year:

Older Person: Awwwwwwh I never remember it being as hot…. What will we do??, God I’d love if it rained (as they stare wistfully into the distance as if beckoning the arrival of dark clouds like a disciple of Yoda). .
Me: Eh weren’t you complaining a few months ago about there being too much water..??
Older Person: Eh … no that doesn’t sound like I’d say. Anyway this is too hot FACT!!, I’m sick of this weather, I’m not made for it… This is as warm as I ever remember..
Me: Eh well you do seem to tan well judging by that redness on your arms from your sleeves downwards (I’m trying to help them feel better about themselves). Anyway 1995 was pretty hot, it hit 30 degrees at one stage as I recall
Older Person: Naaaah this is way hotter… the last time it was this hot was that year in the mid 1980’s. It was the Queens Jubilee as I recall (they are starting to sound like Grandpa Simpson at this point)..
Me: Wasn’t that in 1977??
Older Person: Is it that long ago…

My (much missed) late Nan was like this.

March

Nan: Isn't it cold? I hate the cold, it's not normally this cold. Roll on summer.
Me: It's March Nan and it's 11 degrees. This is normal.
Nan: I think it's cold. I wish I lived somewhere warmer.

July

Nan: God it's hot isn't it? I like the warm but this is ridiculous
Me: I thought you hated the cold?
Nan: I do but this is just silly.

September

Nan: Cold now isn't it?
Me: banghead

hehe
