Will elbow bumps replace handshakes?
Discussion
I first experienced an "elbow bump" on Monday when I saw my GP. But since then I've done it many times.
To be honest, I prefer it. There are a few people who insist upon shaking my hand who I'd rather not touch with naked flesh. The elbow bump dispenses with that unpleasantness.
So, could it catch on and become the norm? I very much hope so.
The purpose of any of these forms of greeting is to bring two individuals into a closer proximity for bonding. The elbow bump solves nothing in reality as it still brings two human in to the danger zone. One way or another all of these things are an evolution of sniffing arses and being close enough to smell scent and therefore transmit disease.
After the Spanish Flue epidemic they studied why some military barracks had a near 100% transmission rate while others were closer to single digit. The discovery was that the barracks that had the low transmission rate all had beds at least 2’6” apart. To this day, the military regulates that beds can be no closer than that.
It is not just coughs and sneezes or dirty hands that transmit disease but proximity. It is in our breath as we breath.
The very act of coming together to bump anything is a failure to understand some basics.
The obvious solution is traditional aloofness. Just stand at a distance, avoid strong eye contact and simply give a little nod with the accompanying words ‘alright mate’ or ‘f
k off’ depending on the time of day.

I've been managing this for yrs, pleased man hugging is out of favour.
k off’ depending on the time of day. Mrs PR and I practise elbow bumping. Not quite as satisfying as a drunken messy shag, but we all have to make sacrifices.

....The Vulcans got it right, we should learn from a more advanced species.
Or we could just raise our right arm, as a friendly gesture?
