I called BT from my office this morning about slow WiFi.

The first time I logged into Ebay this afternoon this popped up:

A friend of mine was spooked when his Alexa started laughing during the evening whilst he was sat reading a book, no TV or music on. He disconnected it.


I watch Youtube vids on TV. If I Google something I often get a vid on my Recommended list that is related to something I have Googled.

It's a trap, we are being listened to everywhere.

Alexa sees all and hears all, and don't be surprised if your smart TV is doing the same.

Your new car is also tracking your every move.

If I would have an Alexa or similar in my house, and would be working away from home,

while my partner is staying at home, could I listen into the system via remote,

or play-back everything that the device picked up during daytime later in the evening ?

How the fk do you think Alexa amazingly 'wakes up' when you mention her name, if 'she's' not listening all the time, or indeed Siri or Cortana, or, or...?

Everything you say within distance is pumped back to a big data platform and subjected to algorithms which then impact what you see, or indeed hear, on your chosen social media channel.

Yes you can drop in to the device, you can't play anything back though.

In a fantastic bit of dad shopping I went out to the local garden centre for bird food and came home with a Stihl chainsaw.

Never searched for it online, never registered it or did any kind of online chainsw related stuff.

I don't have siri, alexa or anything smart.

Yet every advert on pH and other sites was for Stihl stuff for months after.

I suspect my Samsung phone was listening while I explained the finer points of the new tool to the wife, this included running it up in the kitchen while she looked on approvingly.

Yes you can drop in to the device, you can't play anything back though.

From the privacy section on the app you can review every activation and every piece of audio that was considered and then rejected. This is so that you can mark incorrect responses to help with the development of Alexa.

It would allow partial spying. However, if you are going to spy on your partner there are better ways to do it. Having said that, it seems a little creepy.

Thanks for the answers, I do not have such devices - or even a partner- was only interested

because in a radio report on domestic violence it was mentioned that sometimes men buy / install these devices

to keep records of what wifey is doing during their absence, this was called "non-violent suppression" or such.

I would not like to have such things in my home,

while their services might be convenient this would interfere with my wish to stay a bit private.
