Preferring 'lockdown' to the norm, anyone else?
Discussion
Firstly, we're not in lockdown, that term conjures up images of inmates locked up for 23 hours a day in a tiny, bare bones cell, allowed out into a 10x10 fully enclosed courtyard for 30 minutes a day followed by a further 30 minutes to shower etc.
And that can be for years.
We're all at home, surrounded by all the luxuries that entails, a late start, leisurely breakfast, radio on, Netflix later, full communication, Internet, clean water, constant electricity, power shower, 'allowed' out for an unlimited time each day for recreation, we can shop at our chosen store for almost anything we desire, can order all sorts of takeaway food for delivery, purchases any beer, wine and spirits and, if we must, we can go to work to maintain our full income. If not then 80% provided by the government with 'mortgage holidays' as an option.
Plus, we have time for hobbies, to build that model plane, fix the TVR (no offence), paint whatever, remodel whatever and do whatever we've been putting off for months.
It's like retirement except without the traffic jams!
The world is quieter now, I trimmed hedges for an hour today and only three cars went past, neighbour's and the whole village are friendlier, more communicative, respectful and generous.
I'm appreciative of this and really enjoying it but....
This is PH so I expect you to do your best to try and burst my bubble.
As a sign off, people have died and families have suffered, to those, i don't know you but I wish you well.
Also a huge thankyou to all the NHS (DHB in my area) for your work dealing with this.

I like driving on empty roads, the air is cleaner, the skies quieter, the shops less people.
No z list celebs on TV in the news, people are reassessing thier priorities and hopefully we come out of it as not much as a slave to consumerism as we were.

My daughter is 6 months old, and her grandparents are missing her terribly. It's by far the worst part about this situation. Facetime and sending videos on WhatsApp aren't the same...
I'm also bored, getting fat and lethargic no matter how many little odd jobs I do, or how many pushups and chin ups I do, I still feel gross.

Not particularly. I rent a room in someone elses house, normally theres no one here and I stay somewhere else 4 nights a week but the house is full of landlords family and his girlfriend who is from Czech republic and cant go home. Happily I am moving to a self contained annex tomorrow and then I can start to enjoy this situation
Yes it’s really not that bad, no commute must be lovely, the cost savings, You can still do most of the things you did before like watch films, workout, cook great food etc.
Work from home no office politics, no getting wet or finding a parking space.
I am loving the roads being quiet, it takes me 45 mins to get back from Bristol now where as it usally takes 1:45 cause of the traffic around Newport

Apart from not being able to go to work, not seeing a lot of my family, hoping my job is still there when all this has finished and hoping I have enough money to last, yer sure I’m enjoying it.
No offence OP, but it’s destroying a lot of people’s lives. Not everyone is living with luxuries at the moment.

Not really. My mum is stuck in with no company, can’t see us or her grandkids.
I’d prefer she was out and about.
It might work for you or might not but have a look at Amazon Echo Show 5 - as long as there's wifi there you can set it so that family member can "drop in" to video calls with her - simply meaning she wouldn't need to do anything techy just be near the device. (Appreciate you might not be able to get round to install it)I’d prefer she was out and about.
It's a solution I've suggested to a pal who has an elderly mother in a remote location so that she can see her grandchildren etc

For those of us with jobs that can be carried out from home (even if a little boring and isolated at times), families we get on with and houses with enough rooms for everybody to have a bit of space and a garden, it's not too bad at all in the short term. For others, maybe not.
My parents are around 70, but healthy and self-reliant, currently busily decorating their house (again) and doing work in their garden.
The unhappily married, single or bereaved might have it more difficult.
I have no interest in watching sport, so I don't miss that.
I do miss being able to do martial arts, but sparring and grappling aren't really compatible with 2m separation.
As the OP says, we are allowed out. We are just told that we cannot interact physically with people we do not live with.
My children are doing their school work and some additional learning, but are not interacting with others in the way that they would normally do, other than a bit of Skype. They need to be persuaded to go outside to play and we spend a lot of time telling them that they can't go on games consoles or tablets. They also fight with each other. I suspect that it is not helping their development, although who knows if it is detrimental?
I've done a few zoom chats with friends and, as the OP says, it is pretty much like going to the pub for 40-something men, but cheaper. There is no walk there and back, though. It has actually prompted us to contact friends we haven't seen for a while.
The government have specifically said that people can go outside to exercise, so there is no excuse for doing no exercise. Locally, a lot of people are out walking and running. There are quite a few people out on bicycles. There is no excuse for putting on weight through unnecessary snacking - and there wasn't before either. Don't buy the snacks and don't keep visiting the kitchen.
Longer term, I'd like to be able to get out and go further afield. I like mountains, but live in a very flat area on the edge of a city.
We need to buy/spend less than many people are accustomed to.
My company have begun making noises about saving money (and the "opportunity" for us to reduce hours and buy holidays, not that useful at the moment! ) so I'm not sure how long we will be on full pay....
I'm not sure how society or the economy will change after this is all over.

There are some benefits to it, but not being able to see friends and family is a big downside, so personally I can't wait for it to be over.

All I've done since lockdown started is sit at my home office. Sat down at 9am yesterday and went to bed at 2am with breaks only to eat. Not even a commute to break up the day.
These sum up my situation pretty well. My wife is an essential worker (NHS) so is still going in to work on the tube. My business is limping along and taking a lot of time and in reality my day probably doesn't look much different to pre-lockdown. However I'm concerned about elderly parents and missing my friends and can't wait for it to be over as well. Gassing Station | The Lounge | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
