I have an appointment with an optician and cannot figure out for the life of me how an eye test can be performed 'safely' post Covid....
I guess no one truly has the answer- it seems that one day it's chaos out there and the next it's apparently blown out of proportion. I just don't know if I should go ahead with the appointment or not?

Yes, feel perfectly safe, barely any daily infections in London right now, been in Aldi every week rubbing shoulders with plenty of people. I certainly wouldn't be concerned about being in close vicinity to a single individual. I've had trades round to the house to price up work without concern.
I have no experience of the UK but zero issues here in Portugal.
Haircut:
1. Put on mask.
2. Hairdresser - wearing a mask and gloves - puts you in a poncho-type disposable thing.
3. Wash hands using sanitiser supplied.
4. You are asked to place wallet/glasses etc in your pockets.
5. Get a haircut.
6. Pay cash? Note is sanitised before going into the till. Card? Fresh Gladwrap-type cover on freshly sanitised pad.
Easy.
My wife went to the Physio yesterday, much the same bar the poncho-thing.
Shops? Masks compulsory for all. Staff now moved from masks to clear plastic screens - like a welders mask but all screen on a headband - so they don't have all the discomfort a fabric mask brings. These are becoming more common everywhere actually, people wearing them instead of masks.
Shops have large screens at the tills too. Staff packing shelves masked, wearing gloves. Baskets, trollies sanitised.
When everyone does this, it does work. We also try to keep 1-2m distance.
Going out and about is no worry whatsoever.

The government was trying to scare the bejesus out of you whilst the NHS was short of kit.Now they are getting on top of things they'd like you to start to go out and spend a bit.

Go to the appointment. There is a greater chance of the optician stabbing you to death with her biro than killing you with COVID.

Might you get sick? Yes. Ultimately we may all need to get sick, or at least >50% of us if a vaccine isn't found which is quite possible. If you have an underlying condition then I understand more caution.
I am more cautious but will be sending kids back to school / nursery as soon as possible and focusing on economic recovery.

I've been going in and out of shops/supermarkets/workplaces for the past few weeks and genuinely haven't worried about it at all.
Maybe I should be worrying, but I'm taking sensible precautions, and I've got work to be getting on with so there's not really any avoiding it.
So yes, if all the usual shops reopen, I would happily start using them again.

Been doing the weekly shop at Tesco and Aldi along with trips to M&S & Pets at Home and Homebase which are all in the same vicinity so combining these in on journey.
I'm mildly asthmatic apparently so my wife worries but she's a dispenser at the local medical practice and probably more likely to bring in the virus from work if truth be told.
Could do with going to a dentist, wonder if I will need to wear a mask...

OP, phone your optician and ask them what measures they are putting in place. Given the length of proximity to the optician, I'd expect the optician to be masked and gloved. You probably can't be masked to the ultimate recommended PPE because it risks wonky results from the tests.
If it doesn't feel safe for you, don't go. It's a new pair of specs; unless you have an eye condition, i suspect it can wait a month or few.

As above, negligible need to worry about Covid-19 unless you're obese / diabetic / undergoing treatment that is suppressing your immune system / over 70.
