I have an account but rarely use it. However, in response to a link I was sent, I read a thread on there yesterday.

What a vile cesspit of hatred it is.

It seems to be populated by lefties and loonies directing bile and venom towards anyone and anything that doesn't fit with their twisted agendas. There is a mob that will happily post personal contact details attached to unproved allegations with incitement to harass.

Can anyone tell me that it's useful? I stand to be educated.

Twitter has been discussed many times on here, depends on how you use it & who you "follow"

Agreed.

You'll find some pretty disgusting stuff from the right wing loonies too.

There’s as many far-rightists as there are rabid left-wingers and it’s equally vile. Just follow any prominent politician or commentator who leans a little too left or right from centre and it’s a toss up between who can be most offensive.

Follow stuff that’s relevant to you though and it can be entertaining and educational but it can also send you down a warren hole of despair so know when to ‘unfollow’.

I used to be on there as a "viewer" only. Was interesting at times.

But say 2(?) years ago it started to become such a nasty place I gave up and haven't been back.

Shame as it was quite useful and enjoyable at times.

I'm still on Facebook but rarely use it and will probably dump that for the same reason.

Indeed.

It's a bit like Facebook and even PH.

Don't read stuff you don't like the look of.

It puts me in mind of when a woman killed herself after trolling on Twitter and being identified. She'd posted some horrible stuff I seem to recall and her justification was "I am entitled to". Which seems to sum up a good deal of what I read.

You could say the same about your local library, if you rarely used it but when you did, you picked up Mein Kampf and Pol Pot's autobiography!

Because folks's with other viewpoints rather than your own is a 'twisted agenda'.

Would you rather it was entirely made up of those who support your 'righty' agenda?

It’s a pretty horrible place if you go too deeply into it.

I basically use it as a news feed - follow various papers and media outlets, some of the more specialist news feeds for my industry. Local transport tweets out delays etc. It’s quite useful for that kind of thing. I don’t think I’ve ever actually tweeted though....

Yep it’s vile. Wouldn’t surprise me if a lot of the accounts are fake and used to stir up anger and hatred. Some of the stuff you see is insane.

I couldn't be arsed to delete the weirdly large number of people I followed on there so deleted my account and set a fresh one up a few weeks ago. I'm trying to just follow cars/Motorsport and mountain bike stuff now and that's it. Yet I still get political st sent my way somehow.

Twitter is one of the few social media platforms I have an account on, I also use it as a news feed, but rarely post anything on there myself.

It is like NP&E on here, only those with the loudest voices are heard, completely intolerable for the most part.

OP doesn't mention his own political view point and the above response comes in. The above response is quite ironic in the context of the OPs post.

I follow (in no particular order) Labour, Conservative and Lib Dem politicians for various reasons around local interest and to stay informed. I don't join in any political chat on twitter. As a casual observer I agree with the OP. There is absolutely vile and horrid things written by both right and left wing users, however on balance I see a lot lot more from the left. Even Kier Starmers posts are often followed by vile posts from people who think he is too far right and who can't get over the fact that Corbyn was just not at all in touch with where the UK sits politically.

Fungle, there are some agendas that are clearly twisted to anyone who has any decent morality - these can be left or right. I fully accept other viewpoints to my own and actually enjoy reading them as it is healthy to have your own views challenged. Indeed over the years I have changed my views on a number of topics as a result of well reasoned commentary and well evidenced discussion. However I have witnessed exactly what the OP is talking about. To balance, I have seen some horrific tweets from the right also (quite a lot actually), but overall far more from the left - this is especially strong with any post relating to Scottish politics.

I do not have a "righty" agenda, but as a general overview, I agree with the OPs comment. I have no idea if the OP has an agenda that is akin to that of Corbyn or Genghis Kahn and maybe he does have a "righty" agenda but regardless, I do see a lot more venom from the left than the right on twitter which actually is the exact opposite of what I'd have guessed before using the platform.

I would say that I am, as far as it's possible to be, apolitical. Or at least none of the current UK parties represent my views, which tend to be driven by economics.

Yes, I am aware that there are loonies on the right of Twitter storms. But I was genuinely quite disturbed earlier this week by some of the vile stuff from the left. For example twisting BLM to push agendas completely unrelated to the subject, for example ending independent education. Not being happy to see reform, wanting to kill, hurt or destroy anyone who doesn't espouse left-wing values.

It also amused me to see"I don't want my taxes paying for that" from people who I suspected had never paid a penny in tax in their lives.

It is merely a window into Weatern consumer society which is built upon hate, lies, extremism and the belittling of those with different of fewer chattels than them.

In years to come society will look back from their position of evolved social media and will find it hard to believe how low humanity sank on the back of the New Sofa Society.

They will marvel at the baffling situation where professional media outlets would take the worthless words of a worthless person about an important subject and broadcast them into our homes.

Critical, breaking news from around the world but first let’s see what vital, high brow opinion Toothless Barry from Clacton, Nazi Clive from Dartmore and nO Level Janet from Surrey have on the subject. Let’s also get the ramblings of a punter with black skin on the subject as they are a different species but we want them to have similar rights to ourselves, superficially.

I went through a period of being told we had to have social media for business purposes. All it does is turn your staff into mental healthcare workers. Unless your business model is built around selling pointless tat to the mentally broken and disadvantaged, the politically extreme and hate filled then the real value of Twitter, Facebook and their ilk is that by not being on them you filter out huge amounts of commercially worthless noise.

If you’re not selling knockoff cigarettes why would you walk into a flatroofed pub and subject yourself to the moronic bile of the self disenfranchised and unwell?

For thousands and thousands of years of human evolution no one ever listed to Moron Mike. Because he was a moron with nothing to say of any merit. Now suddenly we build our entire society around what Moron Mike has to say and then we wonder why so many people are miserable about not being able to afford a new sofa that they never needed but somehow now believe is hugely important to validating their existence as a human.

Just be happy being nobody and having peers who are nobodies because those are the happy, normal people. biggrin

Oh ffs, what a load of old crap.

Twitter is a media platform. It's no different to any other. If you have a tv, you can turn it on when you wish to, to watch Attenborough documentaries and the Open University, or you can have it on all the time and watch Celebrity Toaster Swap. You can go to the library and take out War & Peace, or Katie Price's autobiography. You can read The Times, or The Daily Star.

Twitter is the same. It's whatever you want it to be. Read what you want, follow who you like, and don't look at the rest.

Exactly. I don't understand while people slag-off Twitter and Facebook. Do they know how to use them?
