Someone mentioned ASMR videos to me recently, apparently ASMR is 'a feeling of well-being combined with a tingling sensation in the scalp and down the back of the neck, as experienced by some people in response to a specific gentle stimulus, often a particular sound.'
The few videos I saw were hilarious for their desperately earnest young... not sure what you'd call them, presenters?
But well being? Tingling? Nope.
Anyone into this?

I thought ASMR was something you get prescribed an inhaler for... The few videos I saw were hilarious for their desperately earnest young... not sure what you'd call them, presenters?

If you think this is odd look into a thing called "mukbang" (very dodgy sounding name but not quite what it sounds(pun unintended), it is SFW), it's a sort of tangent off ASMR. A whole new world of WTAF. If you have ever wanted to stick your ear right next to someone's face as they are noisily snaffling some food, and watching them shovel it in, it'll be right up your street! Turns my stomach, but it takes all sorts, I suppose. The few videos I saw were hilarious for their desperately earnest young... not sure what you'd call them, presenters?

ASMR is a real sensation. If you use one of these head massagers the majority of people will feel it. It is a very weird tingling sensation.

Some people get it from other sources. Joe Lycett says he gets it from watching people wrap presents!

I am a 'sufferer', albeit mildly. The videos do nothing for me, but situations can certainly bring about the sensation.
For example, voices of strangers down the telephone, softly spoken with a soft accent can very occasionally trigger me.
People call them 'brain orgasms' and that is really close to the truth. In fact, I would say that a strong ASMR sensation absolutely blows away an orgasm. My last such sensation was over a decade ago though (for clarity, ASMR sensation before someone jumps in...) !
I believe women feel this more than men, in a ratio of 85:15 - so don't expect many on PH to be 'sufferers'.

I listened to a science podcast on them earlier in the year. I thought it sounded like total nonsense until I realised I was quite susceptible and when it is triggered the feeling was rather pleasant to say the least! I then tried downloading some ASMR podcast and they were 99% ridiculous that did nothing more than make me laugh so I haven't revisited it.

Was that the Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry? They did an episode on ASMR. I'm a typical PHer (although not very powerfully built...) and I have never in my life been anywhere near a healthfood shop, yoga class, Feng Shui consultant or holistic therapist. But I can tell you ASMR absolutely is "a thing", and thought it was just me until I read about it a few years ago and thought "blimey".
I used to get it much more as a child or younger adult. The classic one for me was having my hair cut, and in particular I was triggered by that steely snick snick of the scissors or the clippers going across the comb. For me it was all about somebody paying me close personal attention or doing intricate or skilled work for me...I once had it quite unexpectedly watching a chef cooking my chosen ingredients in one of those mongolian Wok restaurants!
It's not remotely a sexual thing at all, I'm totally straight but it doesn't make any difference if the person doing the "thing" is male or female (the wrinkly old mongolian chef fella above confirms that one!). I think the "braingasm" comparison comes from the feeling of it building up slowly inside and then whoa...but it kinda comes up the spinal cord and then feels like every nerve in your brain is turned up to 11, in a pleasurable, warm, connected, lurvely kinda way...but as I said, it's entirely non-sexual, and your face doesn't give anything away at all.
I watched a few ASMR videos a couple of years ago and they definitely get me to 6 or 7 out of 11, but definitely not all the way (fnarr fnarr). I think ASMR is a thing a lot of older adults grow out of, but it most certainly is a "thing" and not some gluten-free lactose intolerant bandwagon (and yes I do know those things are very real and genuine for some people).

I enjoy the barbershop videos. My favourite is Haircut Harry.

This pretty much sums up what triggered it for me I used to get the ASMR tingles a lot as a teenager. The first time it happened I was like WTF, spoke to a few friends about it but none of them experienced one.
One of my best ones was getting my eyes tested, The bit where the optician swiches off the main light and shines the thing in your eye. Moving from one eye to the other and then back again whilst talking triggered it big style.
As I've got older its as if its faded away. I havent even thought about it for years until I saw this thread.
I've just searched ASMR on you tube, I'll need to give some of them a try, to see if I've still got it.
