Private plate question

Just a quickie - I've bought a plate off ebay, and have received the retention doc in the sellers name.
I can therefore assign the plate to my car (I think).
However, if I put the plate on the car, but subsequently put it on retention sometime in the future, would the retention doc come back to me, or the seller?
I've bought plates before from DVLA but not privately!
Is there a stage I am missing to get this plate in my name?
