Local paper using my YouTube videos online

A local news paper keeps using some of my videos from my YouTube channel without asking / referencing the source.

Whilst I’m not that bothered - I put it publicly on YouTube for the world to see, I’m just curious if they are breaking any rules.

Any ideas?

I could of course private the video or re upload it to break the link, but It’s more curiosity

It's public domain AFAIK though there might be something in YouTube's terms relating to use by media outlets - but at the very least it's a bit rude to not credit the original source.

Perhaps a quick email saying you're glad their lazy journalists found your videos useful but would they mind adding a credit next time?

Could you watermark the videos, or have a few frames at the start, middle and/or end pushing your channel, or some kind of message that the paper might not want to be associated to?

Could water mark but I can’t be bothered really. Just wasn’t sure if they were taking the piss. I shall let it slide for a bit as I know they are struggling financially at the mo. Cheeky devils

Bournemouth echo, not happened for a few months but when looking at my stats some random videos have rocketed, but if reverse engineering shows them on a Bournemouth paper.

Not the dpd one, although that is a regular haunt of mine

Another example of lazy journalism, we found the BBC writing a story quoting people as if they had talked to them directly (including my wife) when all they were doing was lifting text from emails to the local council regarding a planning application. No credit for source at all.

I took a photo of the missus lad posting a letter, it was part of a local "write to the carehomes" during lockdown project.

Missus sent it to the lad who organised the event, she was posting the pics on Facebook.

fews days later said picture was being used on BBC website for Buckinghamshire.

Even if it is in the public domain it would be polite to at least message you saying it was going to be used. Easy enough if it’s on Facebook or youtube

I'd check the youtube Ts&Cs. I suspect once you put the video up to YT, it belongs to them and the local rag will have a deal with YT to use *their* content.

I had a similar thing happen to me a couple of years ago. A cheap local rag published some pictures, which was ok - but then the pics were suddenly being hosted on a press media provider and were subsequently purchased and used by a couple of nationals.

I took exception to someone else making money by selling my photos, so threatened legal action. We settled out of court for just under £2,000.

That said - my case was a clear breach of copyright as they had sold my content resulting in it being reproduced in print. The YouTube case is a little different because it's website hosted and probably just links to the video rather than copying/reproducing it.

Has to be worth the cost of a stamp to drop them a letter with an enclosed invoice.
£150 per video would seem appropriate.
