GF's medals

I've been handed my Grand Fathers Medals (and possibly GrandMothers ?) but have no idea what they are / what they represent.

i know very little about his time in the Army during WW2, only that he was in Burma and that my GM looked after the pilots at RAF Wroughton - but wasn't a WRAf ?






just wondering if the PH brain can help ?

it sounds obvious but I'll say it anyway. There is a Burma Star Association (I believe that there is a FB page too), there is also a veterans of Burma type FB page as well - from there you can find a link to service records etc... I'll try to post up a link shortly

We mounted my Grandfathers in a frame which is on display in my mums house.

My gramps was in the Wiltshire Regt too, though in Mesopotamia in WW1, and PH came through with his medals, so you should be in good hands.



The one with the orange and green ribbon is the Defence Medal, which was given to members of the Home Guard, and some other civillian and military organisations

The one next to it with the red, white & blue ribbon is the War Medal 1939-45.

The first two look like the 1939-1945 Star and the Burma Star, which is what you'd expect.

Thanks all, i wish i had his (and the other GF) service numbers but no such luck. I've tried searching on some of the online sites, but nothing gets returned if i try his given name, or the name he was known by.

which now leads to the question, why North Staffs regiment when he was a Wiltshire man ?

I've just been reading Patrick Delaforce on the Wessex Wyverns' campaign from Normandy to North Germany in 1944-45. There is quite a lot of narrative on reinforcements from other county regiments (or corps) being drafted from reserve units into the original (West Country) regiments to rebuild them after particularly savage engagements, so I wonder if it is possible that he had the same happen to him.
