Cash vs card vs CV19

It seems that some people / shops etc are starting to refuse to take cash. Are they legally obliged to accept cash or is it simply a "shop thing" and they can do what they want?

I'd like to kick off but the wife is telling me I'm over reacting.

I've known some smaller independent shops and bars say card only before all the Covid kicked off, they have signs on the door as you enter, you don't like it then go elsewhere.

I always tip with cash but that's about it.

Card for everything else.

I *think* that if you've already used/consumed something (eg if you've eaten a meal in a restaurant or filled your car with fuel), then you have a debt and they'd be obliged to take cash as payment of that debt, but in a shop where you could just put whatever you've picked up back down again, they can dictate their own terms.

I used a £10 note to get a kebab at the local take away, they don't take cards because they are no doubt running other scams under the counter but they do sell good food.

I agree that you are substantially overreacting. Why, when shops and restaurants are absolutely on their knees, would you ever "kick off" about how to pay them for something you want from them?

I think you should respect that it's their call (irrespective of the technical legal position) and, as mentioned above, safer for their staff and for you not to be handling cash. Even well pre-COVID various businesses (including pubs) were moving towards "no cash" anyway.

You should definitely kick off and inform them that 'you know your rights'

See if you can get your picture in the local paper, holding a £10 note, with a sad face as well

Regardless of whether they legally have to accept cash they can simply refuse to sell to you.

Just act normally and use a card.

You would love our local Chinese takeaway, its like going back to the seventies, only concession is the old Hitachi CRT telly died so its been replaced with a cheap LCD, otherwise, you would never know, and taking anything other than cash, would have more chance presenting a card or your phone to pay if you went back to London in the early 1700s.

I had an hour to kill this morning whilst I waited to pick up my daughter.
I wandered around the shops in a local market town and saw signs saying ‘card only’ as well as some saying ‘cash only’ (different shops!).

Thanks for all the replies. Re this one though, cash is legal tender so why would I need to "get a grip" if a shop etc refuses to accept it. Next you'll be telling me that I can't trade a sheep for a lawnmower at B&Q.
