Started this as it does my head in that some people are so lazy and play the can’t do it card to get jobs done by others. Sis in law has a fella, got two 30 odd yr old lads and has just asked if I have a drill they can borrow to screw this desk together, my mrs said yes I can lend them one then the next sentence was oh my fella isn’t confident doing it can I?
Really pisses me off that they say not confident, never done it before blah blah blah wanting me to spend my time travelling to theirs building a desk for them, so a couple of hours time whilst they all sit around doing fk all. They really are a lazy family and expect everything done for them by others. On the other hand would never go out the way for us. One of the lads who only works part time for a taxi firm even got my mrs to travel to his work and pick him up to bring him to ours as we were having a bbq, coz he didn’t wanna pay a taxi fare as it was a bank holiday! Ok to cost us time and fuel but not them.
Rant over ????

More likely - they'll expect a replacement desk because "you broke it". With added compoface.

My niece is married to a PT who also calls himself a wellness instructor what ever the fk that is. He's always posting pics and videos of him on social media of him working out with his admittedly ripped torso out. (his legs are st). Quotes usually involve the words mobility, hard work etc.

The fker can't hit a nail in straight and always has my sister or her husband down to do even the most simple of DIY tasks while he's out taking selfies. His lockdown project was getting some pull up bars put in the garden and he put his back out digiing one hole so my brother in law had to do it.

I think we're confusing incompetent and lazy.

My older brother is far from lazy, but he just doesn't have the head for DIY stuff so pays other people to do it.

My Sis. Right lazy cow. 46, can't ever be arsed to change the downstairs loo roll so thinks by leaving one sheet stuck to the tube is justification for not having to do it. Every bloody time. And never brings her car in to park on the driveway (plenty of room for about 5 cars) so parks one side outside of the double gates. Makes it really difficult to swing in and there's no room to get out the car to open the gates so have to stop on the road, get out, open the gates, get back in then go back and forth a few times to swing in as it's a narrow lane therefore blocking any traffic coming. She brings her dog over everyday as her husband can't be arsed to look after it (his idea to get a dog and then removed all grass from garden and replaced with gravel) so he craps in my garden and she has not once been out pick it up as my dog does her business as well. Ask her to do something "Oh I haven't got time for that". But she has time to do everything she wants to do. Thing is her 12 year old daughter has picked up on it so lunchtime she can't be arsed to get a plate out, or rinse her glass out so gets another glass or when you put a plate down in front of her then it doesn't get washed up. However that is slowly starting to change now as I think she's getting fed up with me shouting at her as the soft way wasn't cutting it.

my BIL was asked to change the seat height on his child's bike whilst the wife went to do the weekly shop. One child with mother "helping shopping", the other child at home with said bike. Its on a QR ~1min job.

He goes to load the bike into the car to take to Halfords, there's some stuff in the boot that he can't be arsed to remove (child is 7yo - small bike). He panick-calls his wife because he can't work out how to put the seats down in the back of the car.

So whilst shopping she carefully explains how to put the seats down on the car, to enable him to load the bike into the car (without messing the seats) because he can't be arsed to empty the boot, so he can take the miniature bike and child to Halfords, so they can change the seat height for him.

I was so embarrassed when I heard this...

By contrast, my other BIL is an electrician and generally very handy.

He gets a surprising amount of callouts to change lightbulbs and fuses.

He said its a ratio of about 60/40 of people who are older and just don't feel comfortable getting on a step or cant reach (which is understandable - if you're landing light bulb pops, you're 80yo and a bit wobbly then its money well spent in my book) vs people who are well able and just can't be arsed.

He has no issues about charging them for the bulb and callout fee though!

I actually wish my mother-in-law was a bit lazier. For the last few years we've been doing up our big old house and the MiL, who is a keen watcher of st like Homes Under the Hammer but who has virtually no practical skills whatsoever, is always 'popping up to help for the weekend'. I wish she'd just plonk her arse in a chair and watch telly but no, she'll start a job and then constantly ask for my help meaning I have to break off from whatever I'm doing. I need an 'ammer, can you get me one? Can you sand this down for me, I'd do it but it hurts my wrists. Can you lift this, I'm not strong enough. I've run out of this, can you get some more? This'll need cutting down, can you do it? As a result what I'm doing will take much longer than necessary and half the time I'll have to redo her work anyway as she's done a slapdash job. If I tell her in terms forcible enough that she gets the message that I don't want her help then I get a bking from the Mrs for being rude.

I'm a tradesman (heating engineer) and make sure my kids, 2 girls, 1 boy can use tools. They're in their early 20's now, They've been out on jobs with me and have spent many an hour under the car or even just taking a wheel off. At uni when they met up with other kids they were amazed at how utterly useless they were round the house, even basics like changing a lightbulb or checking the consumer unit for a tripped rcd was beyond their skills.
Also got an ex work mate who's now a semi retired handyman doing basic jobs for young, fit, intelligent customers who just cant be arsed. Assembling flat pack furniture is a regular job for him ffs.

Why do people entertain family members like this? Family or not I'd tell them to get fked, otherwise you just get taken advantage of.

Yup!

BiL, great guy, but can't/wont do feck all, but has proper champagne ambitions! Nothing ever simple, he doesn't understand when someone does something for you for free there's an unstated expectation of assistance and reigned in ambitions.

For example: wants a new fence down his garden, wants 13" brick piers with lights on them. Okay loop the cables in when you build it, then I'll pop the lights on! Okay he says, then doesn't! Oh we didn't have time he says, we thought you'd just fish them through afterwards! But yeah of course, you save 5 funking minutes so I can spend hours faffing about. And that's why his fence doesn't have lights.

When I'm charging my hourly you can be as unhelpful as you like, when it's a freebie no!
