I personally have not. But has anyone here ever done this? Did you stop them yourselves? Or just left it to the shop floor staff to deal with?

(I've just realised that I've spelt 'Shoplifter' wrong)

Too many to count as did retail security for four and a half years. Those were the days you stood on your feet for 12 hours a day instead of being sat at a cctv podium. Thankless job, shop managers are goons. Stopped doing it as some smack head went for me with a screwdriver. Would never go back again.

How many a week on average? I can only think of a couple of occasions in my life I've seen a shoplifter grabbed by security.

Yep. Whilst filling up the car I saw a scrote inside the garage filling his baggy trackies with boxes of chocolates. I finished fuelling up and walked round the side of the shop waiting for him to come out. As he rounded the corner I got hold of his collar, spun him round so I had his arms out of reach of any potential weapons that he may have had in his pockets and frog-marched him straight back into the shop. Satisfying.

I saw a female druggie scrote kicked out of a store in Leeds by a security guard. She went straight across to the store opposite and stuffed four or five dresses under her coat within a minute.

I went up quietly behind her and said "I'm a store detective, you are on camera"

She dropped them to the floor and walked out sharpish, probably to go in another store round the corner.

I notice she walked off with a male accomplice who was waiting outside.

I told a member of staff and she just said "Oh".

I pointed a guy out to staff in Poundland of all places a few years ago. He just walked into the store, round to the tills, picked up a stack of the big 1kg Galaxy bars and waltzed straight out and stood outside the store (all glass) and started eating one of them.

I mentioned to the checkout lady who said he does it all the time but they don’t have store security so can’t / won’t do anything about it.

I stopped using them after that as it just seemed such an apathetic and futile response.

I have done it. I was in a TK Maxx store when a couple of guys came in, picked up some pliers from the tool section and then started removing the security tags from various items with them. I gave the security guy a tip off and they were stopped on the way out. I found it staggering how blatant they were almost as though they were entitled to do it!

About 2 a week on average so roughly 400 at the end of it all.

If you are stealing from a Poundland, then you really do need to revaluate your life.

Never have and never seen shoplifting in progress but I would absolutely tell staff. I might consider the risk of catching a disease not worth getting physically involved for though.

their approach is probably quite pragmatic, they obviously know from stocktakes that they aren't losing that much to make paying £10/hr to a security goon worthwhile...

Most pay a third party firm nowadays so at least double that.

Yes, known shoplifter and general weirdo was politely being spoken to by a supermarket employee on the till later at night, about how they couldn't serve him because he was barred from the store for shoplifting.

There was no security guard and as this had gone on for a few minutes, and she was by herself at that point, I approached from behind, quickly snatched the two bottles of spirit out of his hands, handed them over to the employee and suggested he should probably leave.

He started to leave after he realised I wasn't going to help him steal despite trying to get me on his side (with a load of strange winks and nods).

Then he started shouting out to anyone that I should have my bag checked and I noticed another smaller bottle tucked in the back of his waistband so as he was walking away I snatched that out and he became threatening but didn't pull a weapon out or anything. By this point other staff were present and he left.

No.

Many, many years ago I worked in Argos after school. A couple of guys walked in, snipped the cables on a couple of upright Dysons on a display and walked out the door with them. I just watched them go.

Manager was furious that I hadn't tried to tackle them to the ground or something, but I was 16, there's no way I'm going to take on a couple of rough looking blokes to stop them stealing stuff, let alone from an employer who treated their staff so poorly. They made me watch the CCTV a few times, I don't know if they were trying to decide if I was 'in on it' or they just couldn't believe I would just let them go.

Would I grass them to security? Probably, most of the time I'm too caught up in my own world to notice, my mind is such a mess these days I can't find a supermarket without headphones.

My first ever job was at Dixons in the mid 90s for about 6 months. One day this old lady came in with a shopping trolley, it was a Wednesday and no one else in the store. Trolley was empty. We all stood there and looked at each other and said thats weird.

She then filled the trolley with blank VHS tapes. They were 3 packs and probably got about 30-40 packs in the trolley. Then she smiled at us and pushed the trolley out and left.

We all said that was really, really strange. Shrugged and about 2 minutes later the penny dropped and we realised what had happened ran outside but she had gone. She was literally 80 and we just didn't think anything of it.

A few months later the manager told me to watch a lad who came in. He was about 12-13 I would say. He was acting sus and stuffed something down his pants and quickly left. Manager told me to get him so I ran after him and caught him where he produced a computer game. Felt really sorry for him I had to watch him in the back office and he said he had never done anything like this before etc and was clearly upset, but the manager called the police and he was arrested. I think the manager really could have just made the lad sh*t himself for half an hour then kicked him out the door. I cant remember what game it was but it wasn't even anything good.

After that incident if the manager called up on the PA for "Mr Spencer to the tills" which was the code for shoplifter I was generally busy with a customer or stacking some stock in the stock room or something. Unless it was kicking off, in which case I would turn up just to watch the show. The most memorable incident being a guy who felt like he had been sold a dud TV came into the store with a golf club and started smashing up the display TVs. Good times!!

I work in Retail. And it's drummed into us that we should never attempt to go after a shoplifter.

laugh

Somehow I'd expect that kind of person to be equipped with a baseball bat rather than a golf club. Perhaps he figured it was easier to stay clear of flying glass if he used a golf club.
