Well now that depends on which friends.... We have a set of friends we can say "18 October 2021 let's do X, Y or Z" and we will all be there on that day. Others, what are you doing tomorrow afternoon is likely to result in a message at 10am saying time or location needs to change...

I have friends who suggest meeting up, with timing and venue, 99% of the time it never goes down that way, they always change it, to them its only ever pencilled in, whereas to me, its a done deal once I have aid yes, I put it down to FOMO.

The key thing here is that because of smartphones, it's much easier TO change your plans on a whim, and in a rather faceless way, with minimal impact.

I would have imagined that this would be much less likely to happen in say, the 90s for example. No smartphone, you agreed a time face to face or over the phone, and if you needed to change, you would need to rely on face to face or phone contact to attune again (unless you were an arse and didn't turn up).

Also, there are way more "things" to distract people in general thesedays and make them change their minds, streaming service and other forms of digital entertainment for example.

Myself and 5 friends try to meet up for a golf weekend once a year. Friday night through to Sunday afternoon. We tend to stick a pin in the calendar for the following year and stick to it. So far it's worked. Ironically due to Covid restrictions this year we had to shift and left it to 3 weeks notice and we were all available.

We'll meet for a Christmas beer around the 18th December and that could be hard work to find a slot for all of us.

Depends on your friends. Most of mine I could arrange to meet up with in 20 years at a specific date and time and, even if we never spoke again, they’d be there.
