My friends and I have an online poker game coming up. I used to play about 10 years ago and was ok ish, could grind out a decent stack.

I've started playing online again and I'm not doing well. I just seem to be bleeding chips. I play a tight game and only raise on solid hands, but find myself folding constantly and with the blinds going up every 10 I'm leaking.

So some good books or tips? I think I'm ok at k owing what to play pre flop but its after that I make mistakes and also possibly as I said above folding to early.

I'd also be interested in any tips - plenty around, but don't want to invest the time in rubbish!

I am okay and quite often get to head to head - but am awful at head to head poker.

Play your hand more strongly. Bet to test other people instead of folding out of it.

Try and limp into stuff. Or min raise suited or connecting cards.

In a fast game you just have to play more aggressivly to suit. Same with fewer people on the table.

MTTs or SNGs? Not sure if you mean every 10 hands or 10 minutes?

Either way, Jonathan Little has some decent content on YouTube e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYRXT7dMp6w

$1.50 HU tournaments running on Stars, $1 HU turbos on Party for some low-cost practice?

Limp in when you can.

Play your position strongly (button / blinds).

You’re not playing poker if you are only playing your strong hands then you are playing the odds of the deck.

You can’t win at poker only playing decent hands!

Watch good players, they effectively never ever limp, it's not 2006 any more.

Agression, agression, agression is the name of the game nowadays.

Exactly, if he is just playing with friends then the more hands he is ‘in’ the more he will learn.

Playing the people not the cards.

Dont always play your strongest hands. Play some that you are certain you are going to lose but bet like you do when playing strong hands (you might bluff a win). Also bet low with strong hands sometimes. Small gains are better than no gain. It will help confuse your opponents so they cant follow your pattern quite so well.

If he's just playing with friends then agreed, play any two cards and just have fun. But the OP also said he has stated playing online again and is not doing well, I assumed that to mean he was playing regular tournaments and the like against randoms in which case limping is unlikely to be successful.

Not playing tournaments currently just regular cash games. Low stakes.

It's hard to know who you are playing, because the money is small I suspect it's no different that free games. You get people raising and re raising from UTG and they have like a pair of 6s. Maybe they are trying a bluff or maybe they arent very good.

Might go higher stakes and see. Will try some more aggression, do find though that sometimes it scares people off but I guess that's about being aggressive in the right position, I.e late when others are already invested in the pot.

Cash games are a whole different kettle of fish. Low stakes is a challenge, you have to navigate the whales who are just there to have fun and blow off a few buyins as well as the staked players from low-cost countries who study like crazy and often play very well even at 1c/2c levels.

In part this is why I gave up on online hold 'em years ago; the quality of the player pool is constantly improving and ferociously good at all levels, the amount of studying required to 'stand still' was something I couldn't be arsed with for a hobby, it's pretty boring continually folding 5 out of 6 hands. 15 years ago I was winning at $3/$6 NLHE and taking shots at $5/$10. I doubt I could beat 5c/10c now.

That's why I moved on to playing the lesser known games; the general skill level is much lower, you get to play many more hands, the software aids that have pretty much solved NLHE just don't exist for other games and I find it much more enjoyable to play in games where no one playing style has a significant advantage over any other - and they're fun.

EDIT: https://www.pokernews.com/strategy/poker-training-... has a number of free and paid training resources.
