This year I've heard the term Karen frequently.. annoying as it is to many it always puts a wry smile on my face. I went out with a 'Karen' for a while and she fitted the term exactly, she even had the 'I want to speak to a manger' haircut, earrings and attitude - this was way before the 2020 Karen.

It got me thinking, coincidence maybe.. but:

I've never met a Donna that wasn't fat and a bit trappy.

Every Lee has been a bit dodgy and / or 'knows a bloke that can get that for you...'

...I'm sure it can't be true that every Emma is a psycho in relationships - although the numbers do seem to suggest so.

My brother’s name is Lee, I can confirm he knows someone whenever I’m having an issue with something. This month it’s a decent local tyre fitter, and a buyer for old trading cards.

I work in a factory, and it’s full of Daves and Steves - and so to me, people of that name are tubby 40-somethings who like fishing and football...

P.S. I’m neither a Dave, nor a Steve. I’m a Matthew if that stereotype exists

Well...my first girlfriend was a Donna, she was slim and quite shy, quietly spoken.

And I’m a Steve. 40 something but built like a racing snake. In fact, of all the Steves I can think of, none of them are ‘tubby’.

I’ve known a few Emmas and they’ve all been nice, none with any outwardly psychotic traits.

So I’m not sure this stereotyping names is going to
work that well.

Although I have known a couple of Lees that were a bit dodgy...

I used to have quite a lot to do with names when I was working with the blood service on collection teams. We needed to call out people’s’ names all the time. After a while you would be able to guess the approximate age of the owner of a name. For instance, Victorias were always of a particular age, born when that name was all the rage. If you had to call out for a Doris, you knew to expect someone quite different.

My favourite name was a young lady I met in the City whose name was Mojo. I picked up her paperwork and stood there gawping at it like an idiot - very unprofessional of me. “That’ll be me,” she said and stepped up.

I apologised and said that I was surprised by her name, as I had always been a fan of American blues music, and the first thing I thought of was Muddy Water’s song I Got My Mojo Working. She said that was exactly right because her dad was a jazz musician and she was, in fact, named after the song. I said that it was a lovely name. She answered, “Well, I suppose I could have been called T-Bone.”

Another time in Romford, a very well dressed and good looking young black American guy came in. Not a common sight in Romford, neither him nor his obviously very expensive suit. It turned out he was a specialist accountant of some kind, on a secondment with a firm locally, and had noticed us there and decided to drop in. Top guy.

That day I was doing the health check and finger prick stage, and one of the things I had to ascertain was if the donor had any signs of a cough or cold. I picked up his paper, and saw the name James Brown. Again, my mask slipped and he was laughing at my consternation as we sat down for the interview. He said his parents had a sense of humour. I replied that it was not his name so much that had flummoxed me but the first question I had to ask him.

“What do you mean?”

“Do you feel good?”

Great thread!

My late brother Dave, was not tubby, but he did love football and fishing. He only ever had one significant girlfriend, Emma, and she was psycho!
One of my tenants is an Emma, she is bonkers, but nice with it.

Mate of mine dated a Donna, who was a rather overweight and could have been a cheap hooker.

I know a Lee, though not that well. He does a lot of coke and just appears dodgy.

'Gary' seems to be becoming the butt of advertising agency jokes, always portrayed as a hopeless white guy with no direction in life.....pretty much spot on in my experience.

I've never met a Wayne than wasn't dodgy, and Duncans also, Most Marks I know are usually best avoided for one reason or another.

I'm a Gary, and we seem to come with connotations of a hopeless wannabe geezer... the type that drive a clapped-out beemer with some 'Sport' bits glued on and a fart-can exhaust.

I can see this thread offending many. So I'll pitch in:

I've yet to meet a Nigel who wasn't terminally dull.

"Nominative determinism" is the term, and it's a real thing. Although as ever, it's more to do with demographics and cultural norms than anything else.

That aside, all Lees are definitely a bit dodgy. And I've never met a Tom I didn't like.

Everyone called Alex I've ever met has been slightly pretentious, up themselves, arrogant, or a combination of all 3. I include myself in that (my name is Alex)
