Opened mail

As noted on my NIP thread I've recently had a couple of letters delivered that had been opened - the right hand edge of each envelope had been sliced off. It looked like this had been done by machine, they were very precise, sharp cuts. Both letters were correctly and clearly addressed (although delivered next door).

I didn't give it much thought until I went to my local delivery office to collect a parcel, and a lady at the counter was complaining that some of her mail had been opened in the same way. Has anybody else had this happen? Is it common?

Just curious, I'm not going to put my tinfoil hat on just yet.

I have been told that as letters spin through the automated systems the contents rub against a corner, often splitting cheap envelopes down the seams/folds.

This will happen if you put a key or coin loose in an envelope too.
