What's a good Scrabble score?

My wife and I started playing Scrabble this year. We only ever play together so we don't know if we are any good yet.
Just wondering what a decent enough score is amongst friendly amateurs.
When we started, the winner was usually around the 300 mark with the loser 20 or 30 less.
Now it's a pretty poor game if we don't both get over 300, with the winner closer to 400. We've both had a couple of wins over the 500 mark but not often.
I'd imagine serious players can get some pretty high scores but what sort of score should we aiming for if we're not going to be embarrassed if we ever get round to playing others?

They sound like very respectable scores, I'd be chuffed with over 200. My trouble is I always try to make the longest word, my wife always makes better strategic use of the double/triple letter and word squares, making multiple words in one go etc. Consequently she always trounces me.
