Lions Club. Any experience or knowledge.

I have been invited to join a branch of the Lions club.

Not being a "joiner" of clubs and organizations, I'm interested to hear of any experiences good and bad. Am I right to assume it's like the Round Table, Masons and the like?

Charity do gooders, the only two I know who are members are quite patronising people who I try to avoid, I know its a small sample and maybe not representative of the whole but it gives out warning signals.

Been to a few meetings as a guest and have been friendly and enthusiastic bunch who are trying to do good things for the community as a whole.
Members I have met have been part of it for decades and children will often join once older.

Lions member along with the missus . We joined so that we could help with fundraisers etc , was a bit stuffy back then but recent years have seen a lot more younger people joining . Don't bother with meetings , as I work away quite a lot . We enjoy it , have a laugh , and usually a few beers along the way too .

The guy who has invited me is this year's president. I'm likely to be moving soon an he is head of the branch where I plan to live. We knew eachother way back (kept in touch on Facebook) from having the same local. He thought it might be a good way to get into village life. I had hoped there would be beer involved.

Give it a go , certainly a good way of making introductions . We've recently finished our second season of running "chase the ace' every Thursday from the local hotel , massive fundraiser .
