Not quite a Bill Hicks rant but: advertising.

First of all, I don't watch much telly (mainly sport and the odd documentary). Every opportunity the broadcasters get, they're switching from the event to give the latest from a betting company, or fast food chain.

If I pay for a PPV event, I also would like the option to decide whether or not I want to see adverts. When boxing was 'free' to watch we could see all the event, but now there's a ticket price on the bigger bouts, the broadcasters have decided that they will do away with those in-betweens and squeeze in a quick clap of Anthony Joshua's hands as he plugs Lynx products.

Also, many ads seem to be on a box-ticking mission. BLM trending? Let's change the adverts to suit. Is this what the public want? Something is in the news and people are feeling strongly about it so let's jump on it to sell or products.

Then there are the advertisers who favour the cuddly/cute animal singing a Top-of-the-Pops special. It's all getting quite annoying for me. Yes, they clearly yield results from them but if I can use an ad-blocker online, I would also like a similar option on the telly or before I watch a film with my kids at the cinema. We're captive for them to target young impressionable minds and it seems like there's no escape.

I really could do with a 'press the green button if you'd like to see messages from our advertisers' option.

Press green button would be more like double your current subscription fee,

The general idea previously was that you paid to have adverts removed from something. That concept is slowly starting to erode.

Rarely watch anything 'live' and if I do, it's generally five minutes behind so I can scroll x 30 through adverts.

We've got a pretty comprehensive Virgin package along with three V6 Tivos, but I have to admit that my watching of actual TV channels is now almost zero. Absolutely anything I do watch from the TV has to be recorded and you basically have to allow 15 to 20 minutes per hour for adverts - so a three hour film really needs about 40 minutes or so of delay before you start watching it.

The number of commercials is just too much now - live TV is pretty well unwatchable. What gets me is that on a cable/sky package these aren't free to air - I'm paying a lot of money for them.

I really ought to ditch it, but the broadband is ridiculously good and since we both WFH we can justify the £100/month and ignore the TV. (Cabinet right outside the house, serves us and some cottages full of OAPs, pay for 200mb and get 215-250 all day)

If the advertising works you will buy the advertiser's products. On average you will pay at more than the difference in subscription fee because you will pay an increased amount for these to cover the advertising costs.

A bill hicks rant would be justified, marketeers have ruined the world and as Bill advises so eloquently. Marketeers should do themselves a favour and kill themselves.

Does anyone get anti-marketing at adverts? You get interrupted by multiple ads on a channel and I pigheadedly resolve not to buy that product or service even though I could use it and I'll go to a rival instead.

I don’t mind at all adverts on ITV as they have to pay their way to provide their service. I’d rather that model than the BBC tax on the poor.

I do object to ads on sky that I’m already paying a sub for though.

I don’t watch any live tv these days, but Instagram goes though times of every third photo being an advert.
This came up yesterday, and it did make me chuckle:

If only that rival had a way of making themselves known to you.

Ublock origin gets rid of most of them.

Unlike broadcast TV, everything you view on the internet is at your request, so you get to control what is and isn't displayed for you locally.

Ads are why I stopped watching TV in the mid 00s. Everything I want to watch can be streamed or acquired from other sources.

Someone said “tax on the poor”? Advert are exactly that. If you live in the world of Prime, Netflix, Apple and Disney TV there is no advertising as your subscription covers the content development and they dont need $ from proctor & gamble.

With BT, Sky and Virgin i they dont own(in most cases) the original content so your fees dont quite cover the cost of buying it and hence P&Gs money is a helpful top up thanm you very much.

I see the problem... I just don't see how it needs to be our problem.

When a proviser is relying on those who consume their service (content) to also be their product (advertising target) they have a broken business model.

And that isn't my problem to fix.

It's a catch 22, more aggressive and invasive advertising is being used because aggressive and invasive advertising is driving away your product. Ultimately, it is a self correcting issue as more and more people cut the cord, as our American brethren say.

If there is anyone to be angry at here it is the greedy content owners who are charging outrageous fees.

Someone should start a website that lists all the companies. Then they could probably get those companies to pay them to prioritise their website so that other people could find them easily!

This idea is now my intellectual property so don't even think about stealing it.

This is what I thought, but I noticed when Amazon had the football a few nights ago, there were ads a plenty from the usual suspects.

People who work in this industry fascinate me, they seem to live a life or perceive everyone lives a life much like politicians do.

Everyone is in an interracial relationship, all men are fit, beautiful and have beards, all women are seemingly pregnant or have kids. or staggeringly pretty.

If they want us to buy cars, they are always in utterly empty cities, with smiley people driving them, I would be smiley if I was driving a car traffic free in a city too. They drive past a club and people in the club stop and watch as it drives by, a McLAren, no, A Ferrari, no, an Aston, no, a KIA! Ore these people serious?

I get you have to big yourself up, but Dear God they come up with tripe. We can all have this amazing lifestyle if we have this phone, this mobile deal, this perfume, we all have multi racial friends in amazing locations if we drink this beer, we can all have fun with our mates if we use this gambling app ior play Bingo in a park with them ffs!

Oh and remember the catchphrases, "Your xyz, your way. "That's why" "we all know this year has been weird, but buy our stuff yeah"

It is pure unadulterated garbage, but it MUST work or surely they would not bother
