Is this still true? Do modern farmers still respect the Friday business embargo? And why did it start in the first place?

Never heard of a business embargo for farmers on a Friday - how does this work with livestock, cows that need milking etc?

Farmers in my locality work 7 days a week. During harvest they are in the fields for 18 hrs a day, same for lambing

Yes work but not business, try selling ag machinery on a Friday for instance.

I've been in the ag industry 22 years and dealt with farmer customers for 12 of those - never heard of this before.

I've also dabbled in dealing with farmers and have never heard of such a thing.

In my experience they are as tight as a ducks backside and if the deal is right will do business any time!

Farmers are great for sayings

when I was 17('88) the old boy I did a harvest job for near Bedford told me:

Never marry a horsey woman as it's the pommel that gets em excited

and

Never trust a man with slip on shoes. If a sales rep turned up with slip on shoes on I was to tell him promptly to FRO.

Where I come from in the Yorkshire Dales our local auction mart ran, and still does run, on a Friday.

I have just one pair of slip on shoes; am I a bit trustworthy?

And a mate who cannot tie laces after a serious stroke - I think you'd have to cut him some slack.

It's not just farmers.

Nobody should ever do business with a man from Warwickshire wearing slip-on shoes!

I come from farming stock on both sides going back to the 1700's and never heard that said about business on Fridays. My father did give me two bits of advice that I have followed: Never do business with a glass in your hand. Always marry a good cook in preference to a good mistress, as it is easier to hire a good mistress than a good cook.
