Just purchased my first Axe.

My grandad would be turning in his grave if he saw me chop up wood for the Pizza oven using a kitchen knife.
As a child I spent many hours with my grandad chopping wood, cutting thistles down and generally wielding all kinds of unsuitable sharp tools and instruments.
I have entered at the budget end of the market with a basic yet lovely Amtech 24Oz Axe with fiberglass shaft bought for the princely sum of £5.81 on my staff account at work.
Let's see how the powerfully built other half live then, someone is bound to have a Japanese masterpiece costing thousands.

I thought the answer to the "which axe?" question is always to recommend Viking axes. 
The one below is technically the wrong type of axe for splitting but it's a handy size for working up a ladder or actually in a tree. As I have it for that purpose, it gets used for splitting the small pieces I need for my firebox. It's a nice length for single or both handed use but you need to have a big log to rest your work on (to stop you bending over and to stop "misses" from hitting your legs).

A shop calldd Nordic outdoor opened in Edinburgh last year before lockdown. Theres a big window display of the axes. The original recommendation for Gransfors Bruk came from an old PH thread. The axe is excellent and I’d recommend Nordic Outdoor.
