I've always worn it to the right but I just noticed the logo on my belt is upside down which suggests I wear it wrong.

Funny enough the wife wears hers to the left, so she is wrong too!

Which task requires a greater degree of manual dexterity (without implying any bias towards the 'dexter' part) - pulling the belt tight and then back against itself against the frame, or fitting the prong through the punch-hole?

I'd say the latter task requires more accurate manipulation, hence tighten the belt with the left hand, fit the prong with the right...which, with the strap finally fed through the belt loop, leaves the end-tip pointing to the right as you look down at it.

Which references from Google state otherwise? They were probably written by militant left handers.

Just checked with my wife a daughter, they both put tail to the left but have both had their minds blown when I told them my coats with a zip have moveable bit to the left, plug in bit to the right!

I wear mine to the left, which appears to be correct, which is unusual as being left handed I often to a lot of things backwards to convention.

I gave it a go to the left and feels odd. Have less years less than I have lived so it's staying to the right

To the left and i suspect this dates back to the days of gentlemen needing their right hand free to draw their sword should the need arise. Which is why it is also traditional - not that you have to do it - that a gentleman always has his lady to his left when out walking, for that very reason. One never knows when some bounder might chance their arm after all.
