Well, I would think the "polluter elite' ,means the majority of people here.
Time to cancel my flights, dump the cars, sell the house, build a solar powered hermetically sealed bothy of some kind ( not large though).

Until "the world" manages to make China and the USA stop polluting as much as they do, anything else is just pointless b
ks. Has the UK not already slashed its CO2 output the most out of the European countries?
As you say it'll be used to introduce more unwanted taxation under the guise of being green, we'll just overlook how the electricity is produced, or the damage done to the environment around the rare earth metal mines extracting raw materials for the batteries.
Just like every other green bullst tax we've had.

t tax we've had.Funnily enough, I was thinking about this today, when reading about the proposed Boom XB-1 supersonic airliner/business jet. When we are supposed to be focusing on our carbon footprints, do we really need this? If it were going to be hydrogen powered, fair enough, but pumping more carbon dioxide into the bottom of the ozone layer? Really? Do these guys have their heads in the sand?
The oligarchs constantly searching for bigger and better yachts, what is the carbon footprint of building those things, let alone running them?
Only by having a carbon tax on every manufactured product, to reflect the carbon dioxide generated by its production and transport, will we ever get any change. Those carbon taxes should be going into replanting deserts to make them carbon absorbers they used to be. Some serious First World support in making the Great Green Wall a success, would be a good start.

I'm 41 and I do worry that the green powers that be would just like us off this planet full stop. - this is getting a bit of press. I would not be surprised for it to show up as justification for a variety of policies.

Except them of course, they are green and don't drive massive SUVs or go on holidays or anything like that.
They just stay in their house doing zoom meetings, eating cress and cycling to the local park for days out.
I jest, but I do find it Interesting that one of the most vociferous greenies I know has 5 kids and changes his car every 3 years. I have the one child yet it doesn't stop him bringing up my thirsty 19 year old iceberg melting RS6 anytime he can.

The claim is that half of the growth in emissions from 1990 - 2015 comes from the richest 5%. Total emissions in 2015 were 35 billion tonnes, up from 23 billion in 1990 (https://ourworldindata.org/co2-and-other-greenhouse-gas-emissions).
Half of that growth is 6 billion, so you could say that from the total emissions today, approx 17% is produced by the top 5% percent of the population. That's still skewed but at least it gives a more readily understandable metric, and a much less dramatic headline.
If that claim is true, that is. The report claims Oxfam (!) as source but fails to quote a reference (or at least I can't find it).

Yep..I get the Greta Thunberg infrequent flyer pass...last flight Feb 13 2020 and probably drove about 2000 miles.Normal 100,000 air miles and 50,000 road miles.

A saw a video on YouTube of a steel mill in China, the length of train bringing the coal in beggared belief, it was so big they actually invert whole carriages, while still coupled together, to empty them faster.ks. I’ve got nothing against people having as many children as they like, as long as they can care for them properly. But if you have 5 kids you shouldn’t be preaching to anybody about anything remotely to do with sustainability, you should shut the fk up and be incredibly humble.Megaflow said:
