Towards the end of her life my mum thought, incorrectly, that she had a bottomless pit of money. You had to be a bit cautious.

Mum: "What would you like for Christmas? Money no object."
Me: "That's nice, mum, thanks. I'd like a new Workmate. "
Mum: "Have your dad's."
Me: "Well, that's kind of you, but you asked what I'd like and I'd like a new Workmate."
Mum: "Have your dad's. You know he always looked after his tools."

I now have two old Workmates.

TBH the example you give does not show that your mum thought she was loaded, in fact quite the opposite.

She has a point though, if you already have 2 serviceable workmates in the household a 3rd is pretty weird.

Perhaps you should have asked for a new coal scuttle instead?

Memorable Conversations:

"You forgot to post the conversation you mentioned in the title."
"So I did."
.....................

A lovely guy I know thought it would be a nice idea to take the cine films his wife and step daughter had brought with them years before and have a DVD made of them for Christmas. He had it cut to feature mostly the daughter. His wife was delighted. The daughter and her family were coming for Christmas dinner and the DVD was left to play for everyone's amusement. As she was preparing dinner his wife would pop her head round the door every so often to see how things were progressing. And then she stopped and looked hard at the screen.

"Who's that?"
"Who?"
"The man."
"That's Peter."
"Peter who?"
"Peter your first husband Peter."

Is this one of those threads that make sense only if you're drunk?

Nothing useful to add to this thread, save to say that I am enjoying its gently surreal nature.

The point smile

I remember working in The Netherlands during the 90s I think, it was like Auf Wiedersehen Pet.
A group of us went to sample the local delights at one of 'those coffee shops' one afternoon. We went through most of the menu sampling many of them whilst playing cards.
We got up late afternoon and practically floated home, I was driving and I remember it well. The burble of the Alfa V6 3.0 as we cruised along the motorway with 4 stoned Geordies on board and me behind the wheel.
As we'd scraped ourselves up from the chairs to leave the shop I distinctly remember someone saying 'Who won?'

'Who won what?' Came the reply.

Why did your wife aspire to be a werewolf?
What's a Donkey jakcet?
Is it a terrible hybrid spawned from crossing a donkey, a jackal and and an avocet?

Is it the way you tell 'em?

In the building society years ago, I had to deal with the garrulous girl who worked there. She was well known for talking while she worked. Multi-tasking. Commendable. I forget what I wanted but she needed details from me. She asked my address which I gave.

"Oh, that sounds nice. Lovely area. Mostly detached houses?"
"No, actually, we live in one half of a pair of semis."
"How does that work?"
"How does what work?"
"Living in half a house?"
"We live in a house. A semi-detached house."
"Oh, I see. You work locally then?"
"No, I work in London."
"Do you drive there?"
"No, I work in Paddington so I go by train."
"That must be dangerous."
"What must be?"
"Working in Paddington?"
"What makes you say that?"
"Working on the tracks with all the trains whizzing by."
"No, I don't work on the railway. I work in an office in Paddington and I go there by train."
"My dad works in London. He drives there. He hates it."
"Why doesn't he go by train?"
"He's a chauffeur."

Faltering start? I did that deliberately to create narrative tension.

Yesterday my wife went for a walk in the park with my daughter and two grandchildren.

Upon her return she said "Guess who we bumped into in the park".

Notwithstanding the fact that social distancing rules are still applicable, and it should have been easy to avoid a collision, given all that open space, my mind started scrolling through the 7 billion plus possibilities...
The first one that leapt into my head was King Faisal of Saud?, followed by Archbishop Makarios and Elvis Presley.

"Don't be silly", she said.

"Well, you started it" I said. "Can you give me some sort of clue?"

"Our son's primary school teacher!" she replied. ( Our son is 37 years old.)
I racked the remnants of my frazzled memory banks...

scratchchin
idea Kerching! "Mrs. Sidebottom?"

"Yes, that's it! I couldn't remember her name, it was so embarrassing!"

Quite how I was supposed to spontaneously guess the name of somebody from over 30 years ago whose name she couldn't remember herself escapes me...

Edit: I would like to point out that our son is no longer attending primary school. He graduated from there a couple of years ago iirc.
