Was trying to explain marketing/branding/sales to 8 year old daughter today.

I got a bit stuck on products that lost out to better branding- i was trying to think of examples but the only one I could come up with was betamax losing to vhs.

Can you think of other products that allowed themselves to be taken out of the market by a worse product with better branding?

Not exactly the question but Apple products are a brilliant example of marketing. The Macbooks are still a very popular brand to be seen with despite the majority of users not needing anything Apple specific (a copy of Office or Google Docs will cover most users) but the brand name makes people spend a lot more than the equivalent Windows laptop, or spend as much and get lower specs.

Does it need the other product to fail?

There are millions of every day items where branding means people will pay way more for inferior (or no better) products just due to branding.

We have a Panasonic American style fridge freezer and washer machine, I'd have more of their stuff but they seem to have pulled the plug on the UK, I blame that everyone thinks you need a German name to be premium.

A combined fridge/freezer/washing machine is quite an innovation. smile

If by better we mean more powerful, lots of games consoles. The Sega Game Gear, Nintendo 64, Atari Jaguar or original Xbox were all beaten by technologically inferior and cheaper competition.

Maybe Betamax v VHS is not a good example.

Both invented by Sony.

Sony rejected VHS and went on to develop Betamax.

VHS IP was sold to Matsusta who launched it as a test with their newly created Japan Video Company brand. As it worked, it was quickly licensed to many other manufacturers. Soon there was a huge pool of VHS machines in the market so software companies started prioritising the VHS format.

So it didn’t lose out due to branding but due to greater availability of software for the technically inferior VHS system.

If only Sony had licensed the Betamax format.

I'm not sure what you're saying here.

Cassette tapes are probably a better format than 8 track, what's more interesting is the battle between the various different cassettes.

Blu ray [is] better than DVD, the real comparison there would be HD DVD. Or I suppose D-VHS, but that's something of an obscurity.

Mini disc is an odd one, did very well in Japan, but I think the fight there is mini disc vs digital cassette, but it's a fight that neither really won, with the majority of people not changing from cassette

Ford/Saab vs BMW/Audi/Merc.... why buy a top-spec big-engined Focus/Mondeo/93/95 when you can spend waaay more on a poverty spec German with usually worse reliability "because badge, innit"?

Every one was beaten by marketing/supply.

8 track just werent enough released or enough players

Blue ray was better but only blue ray players could play it. A dvd was playable on most peoples computers so was more popular. Better market

Mini disk was popular in Japan. Flopped and disappeared pretty quickly from the rest of the world. CDs and dowloaded music won that battle.
