Post Brexit EU to GB car part imports

I’m hoping someone better informed than me could advise.
I bought a set of wheels for my track car from Driftshop in France.
Value £700 and upon receiving from UPS I have a customs charge for £300! The cost of delivery was free so the £700 is a combined total.
Surely this is wrong or do car parts now attract some super tax?

Did you pay VAT in France?
In theory, the French retailer will remove the French VAT and then when it arrives in the UK, you pay the UK VAT. But that can only happen if the French retailer is set up to do that, otherwise you will end up paying VAT twice.
Was there no breakdown of the costs as 300 does sound excessive.

I think it relies on the retailer removing the VAT at their end as mentioned above.
Anecdotally, I pre-ordered something from an EU country a while ago, before the final Brexit date, I think the order was a few £hundred.
I paid sales tax at time of ordering, but as the shipping date ran over the Brexit date, the retailer refunded me about €80 when they shipped it.
Then when it arrived, it got sorted by DHL who sorted the landing fees and billed me about £45..
So it actually worked out cheaper all told, but only because the EU retailer were on top of the situation.
Is there a method to apply for a tax refund from EU retailers in the event that you do get 'double taxed'?

There’s no tariffs on EU “produced” car parts.
Problem is, just because you buy something from France, It doesn’t mean it’s produced in the EU and tariff free.
In the old days, if something was imported into the EU, say from China, the appropriate tariffs would be paid upon entry and no further tariffs would be paid between EU countries.
Now when something is imported into the UK, tariffs are levied based on country of origin certificate.

Hopefully won't be too bad, i was with a customer the other day who had been charged £200 for just over £200 worth of goods. He only on the phone 5 mins and already had a reduced amount that he needed to pay. They duplicated the order value and charged me double. Having the right invoices/paperwork to prove values etc is very important
