If an animal is bigger, with a bigger head, and presumably a bigger heavier brain what does it do with the extra?

A percentage will be used to control motor functions, and an amount to control thinking.

For instance is a retriever brighter than a jack Russell. Not a thread about dogs or people just relative brain size compared to intelligence.

Pressed sheep's brain is delicious with some piccalilli and some fresh crusty bread and butter.

It's called "brawn" for some reason.

Most of it is to control functions and monitor the body. Bigger animals need bigger brains to have somewhere for the nerves to plug into. When brain size varies between animals of the same size, then that can tell you something about how much they can think.

There's plenty of evidence to suggest that with even highly reduced brain size some humans with extremely low mental ability can still exhibit extremely high levels of physical capacity.

A Moose is a mahoosive animal and they have a brain the size of a walnut...they are known to be thick and just eat, hump and charge at stuff.

If you need a larger brain to accommodate nerve endings, maybe Wayne has Scarts instead of USBs

Size isn't (always) relevant. Think of it like engines.

A poorly designed and engineered V8 can be slower, less efficient and have less power than a 3-cylinder 1.5 litre turbo motor.

As others have said, generally the larger the animal the larger the brain as it needs a greater number of neurons to 'plug in' to represent its body.

The bigger measure is the ratio between brain - body mass. Generally (and I mean very generally) the higher the ratio the more intelligent.

Two other main points -

Folding - increases the surface area of the cortex, we do quite well with this and anecdotally the greater the folding the more intelligent (never actually looked this up though). This is very useful due to the way the neurons in the brain are arranged.

Lastly, evolution. Not every animal has a cerebral cortex.

ETA: who knows what these larger brained animals (like the sperms whale) do with the extra grey matter, it may just be there to control a bigger heart and a tail. But extra doesn't mean more intelligence.

There doesn't seem to be an equivalent of supercharging for brains, not sure if there's an equivalent of higher revs. So not much substitute for cubes.
