Starbucks - 'What's your name?'
Discussion
After a long drive, I was tired and needed a coffee, I didn’t really consider the answer to the question of ‘what’s your name?’
‘What’s your name?’
‘John’
‘Is that J O H N or JON?’
‘Does it matter?’
‘No’
‘Why are you asking me for my name anyway, I’m the only person here.’
‘Well, you’re not the only customer here’ as I take a look around the café I spot a lady seated with a coffee, I’m guessing she’s been served but technically the barista is correct, what a fool I felt…
‘we ask for a name to get to know our customers and create an experience’
‘thanks, I’m having a great experience’.
‘you don’t have to give us a real name’
‘Oh ok’ I try to think quickly and respond with a cool name, something unusual but snazzy,
‘John…’

I’m sure they do it so they can spell it wrong and then people post it on social media and it’s feee advertising
Starbucks coffee is f
king grim. I had the misfortune of having a flat white from there recently and it tasted like milk with a slight hint of ashy mud
No wonder people load them up with sugar.

I've resorted to using my middle name as they simply cannot comprehend my first name, even though it's relatively well known and not weird.
This goes double when abroad, notably in America.
It does help that my middle name is shared with a Royal and they (Americans) sometimes get all gooey when you say it. I may egg this on by putting my poshest accent on.

Man, you really told that minimum wage retail worker.
This. Also some people get really uptight about how their name is spelled. JON John's in particular.
But we should look at this from the minimum wage earners perspective.
So some random walks up to the s
tbucks counter, orders an Emulsified Pigfat drink, artificial flavour E47 and gets indignant about giving their name. The one who took the order is just going to pass the cup on to the one who is making it and is worried that by the time the drink is made 10 other people will have walked.through the door and the guy or ordered the drink has disappeared (often up their own arse). This happens a lot to retail workers.
So the drink is made, the person who made the drink shouts out "Emulsified Pigfat drink, artificial flavour E47" and gets five people walking up to claim it... And this person didn't take the order so they have no idea who it is actually intended for... Let alone that they aren't any of the five claimants.
So would it hurt just to have said "with/without a H"?
They were just trying to do their job right... I wish more people had that attitude.
They don't give a crap about your name, they give a crap about not receiving abuse because you didn't get your drink and let's face it, the OP would be that kind of person to berate a min wage retail workers when he has screwed up.

”What’s your name?”
“Batman.”
A pause followed by a smile as they write the name.
A few minutes later: “Venti mocca-chocca-latte-cino-thingy-wotsit for... Batman?”
“I’m Batman.”
Always elicits a smile and a chuckle (plus the occasional unamused eyeroll from some humourless so-and-so who’s still waiting for their coffee.)

OP, put yourself in the workers shoes. You've been told by your boss what to say, you say it, and then some knob pulls you up on what you're saying. From that perspective, who is the unreasonable one?
