So you snooped through your friends finances and are asking how to take the moral high ground?

Maybe just cut ties if it bothers you that much.

It’s not benefit fraud if he’s being given the money.

I was expecting a reply like that but you are missing the point. Forget that I looked at them, the fact is I knew something was going on for years and I questioned him endlessly how he could afford everything and was fed lie after lie. I might have snooped at his bank statements from the bin but I think that's a harmless crime to the one(s) I discovered. The question is would you shop them or not?
What crimes have you discovered?

Why would you question a friend endlessly over how they could afford things? It’s really none of your business. he probably didn’t want you to know his dad was giving him money.

I really don’t know what you are going to report him for or who you are reporting him to.

This OP.

I get that it may be a little frustrating or seem unfair that he seemingly doesn't need to work and is getting assistance from his father (which is neither here nor there for the benefits claim), whereas most of us have to work for it, but that's the way it is.

Unless you suspect foul play (in that he's taking the money from his dad unknowingly?) But you have no proof that, that is occurring.

I'd say just leave it be, he's either a mate regardless of how he gets his money, or he's not a mate because you dislike how he lives/gets his money (in which case move on).

How can he be transferring money from his Fathers account, is it not more likely his father is transferring money to his sons account?

If I were you I'd confront him, tell him you found his bank statements and went through it noting he also gets these payments from his dad. Reassure him there is nothing mental or irrational in what you've done and it is indeed he who is the wrong by being given money. Convince him it is not too late to to put this right.

Give him the opportunity to come clean and see what he would like to do to make amends.

If he tries to say anything about you having this info explain to him like you did to us that entering his house and going through his rubbish to find out his finances is perfectly reasonable.

Definitely this. Please capture it on video. Do try to keep the camera running while he kicks you back across the road!

advise him it's foolish to dispose of bank statements so carelessly. De friend him if it annoys you so much.

yes it is. ALL income regardless of sourcehas to be declared. I think they ignore like 10 a week but the rest will.reduce your income based benefits pound for pound.

so not declaring it IS fraud.

morally i am against people who can work but refuse to getting benefits. he shouod have a job seekers agreement that he has to follow. sometimes for people unfit to work they sign you off from that requirement- but that should be medical only not for people too bone idle to work.

The problem and the answer are both in the first line of your first post : "I have a mate .."

Just tell him he isn't a mate any more, and get on with your life.

Not sure where I sit on this

How would you feel if he waited x years on bennies until his dad died and got it in a lump sum, rather than drip feeding small continual amounts

Benefits should sadly never be a safety net and I find it very frustrating that we happily pay non genuine claimants to sit at home, whilst we also don’t have enough money in the pot for grass cutting etc

I know it’s not straight forward but if only we could pay people to work, rather than not work

Ring Interpol. You've identified a mass fraudster.

When I was on the dole (2001) my mother in law gave my wife cash every week to help out. Was this income we should have declared.

We paid her back over the years, indirectly by buying some of her shopping, and taking her on Holiday with us.

But we all know under these circumstances we would not declare it as such smile
