I was warned that this would happen, when I had children. "You may be the centre of her word now, but you wait..." came the sage advice. I dismissed it. How could I become peripheral to anyone's world? Ridiculous. I am magnificent, I am essential to everyone around me.

Years pass. Children arrive.

The children are the only things that matter in my wife's world. The graft that I put in to support them, and the risks I take, apparently count for nothing. The realities of life from which they have been protected don't exist, as far as she is concerned. Perhaps I have done too good a job. I could rescue my wife from a burning building and she would complain that I had forgotten her hat.

Earlier in the week, I was tested positive for COVID. When I told my wife the colour drained from her face. "It's okay darling, I've been double vaccinated, it isn't likely to be serious."

"I know, I know" she replied. "But the children have their tennis lessons tomorrow. I'll have to cancel now, and you know how much they enjoy tennis".

I am sure that there are fathers out there who are appreciated and much loved patriarchs. If you are one of them, I'd like your advice.

Out of interest what age are you and your wife? I am assuming the sex stopped pretty much as soon as your wife was pregnant with your last child?

This place really is mumsnet for men isn't it!

I'm not seeing the issue. As you say, being double jabbed means a positive Covid test is very likely to be no big deal, and you'll be a bit under the weather, if that. The kids missing out on an activity they enjoy is a bigger deal. If that was me, I'd be sad that the kids were missing out more than I'd be sad I had covid.

You're wife is being quite reasonable in this instance. That's not to say she's not a nightmare the rest of the time.

Feel your pain.
I'm now in the spare room, struggle to get a shot on the swings. Blah blah.

It’s likely that I’m cold hearted, immature, reckless and more than happy to cut my nose off to spite my face, so take this with the dose of salt you think it deserves.

I respond best to mutual respect and positivity. Based purely on the few words you’ve written, I’d be having a calm but very frank conversation with the Wife explaining all of the ways in which you are dissatisfied with her input into this partnership, (which is what a marriage is), outlining the areas and change of attitude in which you would like to see an improvement, and the timescale over which you want to see those improvements happen. Consider it a final written warning.

If there were no improvements, I’d be getting my affairs in order and then one day just disappear, leaving her to do the heavy lifting all on her own.

The way I see it is that I’m happier on my own than I would be being in an unhappy and unaffectionate relationship and material objects, (house etc), mean little to me anyway.

To an extent, hormones drive women to behave that way if they are not clever enough or lack the desire/motivation to control their actions and make an effort despite hormones. I think for many its almost subconcious in many ways.

I suspect its the same kind of women who abuse their partners on their period and don't take responsibility and apologise for the behaviour.

Its not acceptable for us men to degrade and mistreat women just to get laid because our hormones drive us to desire sex (although obviously some do that), why should it be any different with women and hormones?

A hormone drives you to feel a certain way. You cant help the feeling but you can help how you deal with it. That applies to both genders.

Treating a partner as a "provider" and nothing more is unacceptable and not a relationship IMO.

Sounds like a pretty normal marriage post kids.

My wife recently reverted back to the person she was pre kids becuase she wanted a 3rd child but that ain't happening (2 is enough) so she's gone back to her usual ways. Normally she's too tired for anything other than making sure the kids get 150% of her.

I'm getting a dog instead and hope it offers me the companionship I seek - not the sex obviously as mentioned above.
