Hope it's Ok that I'm posting in Lounge rather than the IT section.
As an old-duffer I get a bit confused by the benefits of different social media options. I do Facebook because most of my family is overseas and it's a good way of posting photos and exchanging personal messages that keep us in touch with what we are up to. I also look at Twitter but limit myself to a handful of Tweeters that post things on issues that I'm particularly interested in.
But Tiktok, Instagram, Whatsapp and Snapchat? Can anyone tell me in few words what's best about each? I guess that with the the latter two it's about messaging rather than having a permanent record so I sort of get that. But why Instagram rather than Facebook and what the heck is Tiktok all about? Thanks.

I am 47, aside from having a Facebook account I have never used any social media. Even with Facebook it was the novelty of seeing how bald and old the people I went to school had got, after that I unfriended everyone.
Literally I have zero interest and I am not narcissistic enough to believe anything in my life would be interest to anybody I have ever met. I have actually reached a point in my life where none of this is of any interest to me and I am actually OK with that and starting to embrace it.

Facebook - good for the stuff you are doing. Also, a lot of local businesses (cafe's, restaurants, shops, clubs etc.) will have a page you can follow to see news and get updates on offers / events. You can often see opening hours, reviews, menus etc. on their pages. Also, councils, NHS, police, traffic often have Facebook pages and provide updates on mundane but useful stuff like Bin collections, road closures.
Instagram - this is mainly about pictures. There's a bit of crossover with Facebook, but the updates are more visually focussed. A bit of a mix of young people posing, and some more serious photography. Some great regular pics from the likes of NASA, National Geographic and very talented photographers. A lot of content is tagged, so you can search for hashtags, and see all updates tagged with that - e.g. #Formula1 may return updates from drivers, spectators, fans etc. I personally follow people who take interesting pictures to use as inspiration for photography.
WhatsApp - this is a messaging service. The big benefit is that you can have multiple users in 'groups' regardless of whether they have iphone / android / another. Everyone can share chat and pictures to individuals, or to groups. It works over wifi/data, so any shared pictures will not be subject to MMS charges as they could be sending as an SMS message.

Instagram is people sharing photos, so you won't get long rambling posts about how people are so happy about stuff and no neighbourhood groups moaning about speeding cars and dog poo. You may get photos of random nonsense depending on who you follow, but my friends just post holiday snaps, dog walking photos, end of run photos, etc.
It's the one I use the most as I can just look at photographer's work easily, see photos of bikes, etc. with only a tiny bit of interaction.

As an old duffer myself I can tell you what I use and what for.
Twitter. I really don't get Twitter and rarely use it. I keep an account going as certain bands I follow often announce tours and new releases on it.
Facebook. I'm on this the most. It's great for interest groups and keeping in touch with family and friends I don't see often. It's nice to see photo's of my niece and her family as they moved to Australia for example.
Facebook Messenger. Not a fan but I have some friends and family who use it for messages. My eldest uses it rather than WhatsApp. I wish he wouldn't so I could delete the app.
Snapchat. No clue, I'm too old. My son uses it more than the above. Tried it once and didn't get it.

This is pretty much all I use mine for - but it's useful. I follow bands and venues, and most smaller bands if you tweet them the day of the show they'll tell you what time they expect to come on. Depends on your definition of 'social media'.
In the broadest sense it could be said to be anything that lets you connect with people/communities/businesses.
It can cover everything from the comments section of the Daily Mail to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Imgur, Snapchat, TikTok, Youtube, MS Teams, Workplace, Telegram, etc., and at the extreme end of the spectrum you have forums on PistonHeads!

The sad thing is that Tik Tok is doing very well and other apps (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube) now have features to compete against it.
Tik Tok is basically short videos filmed in portrait that are under a minute. Mostly I see self-filmed dancing videos and short sketches on the platform. I personally don’t use it as most content is being made/ aimed at teens.

My vote; Instagram. Mine's all V8 Land Rovers, some shooting, the RS4 and occasionally the Cayman S !!

They already have, nothing to do with the fact that the latest 'trend' seems to be uploading tv show clips for easy likes tik tok will soon increase that time limit, to 3 minutes
. Tiktok takes some using so that the algorithm understands you but once it does it is brilliant. I get all sorts of car videos and old racing videos as well as comedy sketches and loads more. I'd say across the day I probably spend an hour a day on it now whereas this time last year I'd have said TikTok was for kids ands nonces I haven't looked at Twitter in years - but from what I've heard its now turned into a pit of arguments.
Instagram I do like - just a few interesting folk I follow and its a great way to see what they are upto: Car builds, F1 drivers, creative folk

Tik Tok is basically a load of "ladies" doing stupid dances in skin tight Lycra and recording it on video. Yeah some of it is well thought out and some of it is funny but the majority of it is garbage.
It was a product of the demise of Vine. A platform that offered content creators 6 second video clips. Which also turned into ladies doing stupid dances in Lycra.
A lot of these vine / tiktok stars are now pretty famous (i.e wealthy) and can make $10,000+ for 1 video just with a product placement.
Some of the big brands will pay a lot more. For example if you have made an app that makes you look like your face is a goats face and you want to charge £1 for the app you just get some mega famous Tik Tok star to do "goat face" for you drop them 20 grand and off you go.
In short, unless you want to spend £1 on an app that turns your face into a goats face then do yourself a favor and stick to Facebook. I wish I kid, I mean did.

Facebook - great for enhancing many aspects of your life, whether due to local interest (getting help locally or finding out about things like the pillock lorry driver who ignored the height warning signs and drove into the low bridge near me causing a massive tailback), sports/pastimes, buying/selling stuff, recommendations for a brickie or whatever.
LinkedIn - great for business networking (can also do that on FB if you run a small business).
Twitter - great for news and commentary, great for getting the attention of big business. You can hunt for a telephone number on their website then be put in a queue of 50 people or twit them and get a reply fairly quickly. Also good for networking. I tend to avoid the "twitter storms" and general arguing.
